RE: Im looking to buy a T maxx
The nature of this hobby is the engines are a disposable item,so I would think about this, on e-bay I look at the truck not the motor,no matter how many tanks they say they have on them, I consider them JUNK,and bid accordingly ,you might get a motor that will run,and good, but expect it not to.
I love my maxx,if you get a used one look for one with aluminum chassis braces, and at least center CVDs (Steel Drive Shafts) and then you can get a 3.3 motor for $150.00

I can't be happier with my maxx. I shouldve bought one like thespian said but i bought mine new and i didn't do much research. If i were you i would get a used t-maxx with good upgrades on ebay. Look for one with maybe a nice tuned pipe, alum bulks alum chassis braces, and rpm arms if possible. If you decide to go and get a new one be prepared to be upgrading. The maxx just isn't the best truck out of the box. If you have money to spend get a revo. Those are nice. But i still love my maxx. Shes not the greatest but shes mine

IMO, if you are new to the hobby and new to Nitro stay away from ebay. I would look at a 2.5 or 2.5r (the 2.5r is the Tmaxx 3.3 with a 2.5 motor). It is not hard to learn nitro if you have other mechanical experience, just firgure your first motor is going to not last long.
If you do go the ebay route, remember not everyone is going to be truthfull in the description. Watch for "just broke in", "Only a gallon of fuel", etc.. more than likely motor is shot. Look for a "roller". As stated some upgrades are good, but since you are new, try to stay as close to stock as possilbe. Thing to stay away from are ones with aluminum a-arms and skids. Parts do and will break, but aluminum in the wrong places put stress on other parts. Factor the cost of new motor with the price on ebay.

while I agree with what was mostly said. I disagree about the motor to get. If you can stay away from the traxxas motors. They can just be a pain to tune and you have to do it all the time. Not something a newb is probally going to be good at or want to do which will leave a sour taste in your mouth. Find a roller anf get an os .18 and drop it in there. Follow break in and let her eat. This hobby like any else will wind up costing you $$$$$ the longer you are in it. If I were to do it over I would have just built one from scratch and never gotten a whole maxx. I have replaced just about every part atleast twice coming up with the right combo to bash with. After thousands and thousands of dollars latter I think I have it. LOL
Have fun.

RE: Im looking to buy a T maxx
I would try to find a T-maxx that does not have an engine and buy an OS TM. Might be more money this way but you would get a better and easier to tune engine. I bought my T-maxx brand new. I wish I would have bought mine minus the 2.5 engine. I spent several hours of work and upgrades on the engine only to replace it with the OS after one gallon of fuel. Just my 2 cents. Good luck whatever you decide. This website is a good place to learn things by the way.

RE: Im looking to buy a T maxx
I do not have any problems with my trx 3.3 ,I think they are the best engine you can get for a maxx for the money.
I have 4 gallons on my 3.3 ,and it still has a ton of pinch.
The OS motor is good but it is about $60.00 more, and I don't think it is $60.00 better than the 3.3 JMO.
I think the 3.3 is 4 times the motor the 2.5 is.

RE: Im looking to buy a T maxx
Yea that is exactly what I would do dude. I would buy a roller tmaxx without the motor on ebay. And buy a brand new motor and you are set.
Consider an e-maxx too. Those things are hella fast as well.

RE: Im looking to buy a T maxx
You can buy from ebay just don't jump at something. Think about it first and just look it over. This t-maxx for example http://cgi.ebay.com/T-MAXX-T-MAXX-T-...em120067169244 has some upgrades that make the truck better as well as things that you can sell if you get the truck for a good price. You still end up with the truck and things you can sell to buy other things. There is nothing wrong with buying a used truck but obviously there are people that beat on their trucks hard so you just need to careful of hidden problems. The advice people have given you here is very helpful. Like what words or phrase to look out for. You can even post the one you are thinking about buying and someone will look it over and let you know what they think. If it's safe or not.

RE: Im looking to buy a T maxx
Now Phillip's gonna be getting some interesting phone calls! Probably shouldn't have put his number on this forum. Hehe.
Ok. So, why doesn't it have a radio? The glow plug/starter stuff is engine related, so you probably don't need to worry about that. It would help if you posted pics so we can see what's installed.
But heck, just the tires are worth $60.

Road Rage tires are onroad, so if you think you'll be doing that, then it's worth it. Here's a link to the tires and price per pair: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXAGB9&P=ML. After that, you'd even be hard pressed to find cheap rims to work with them for less than $60.
Now, why is he selling, and why so low? A good stock truck would probably hit around $150. So you'd be advised to check that thing out before purchasing.
