Fantom FR.15 2003 HELP, wont stay running?
I have a brand new fantom FR15 that is in a brand new Tamiya TGR it has new fuel tubing and a new tank. When I start it, it will idle but even after it warms up, if i give it gas it dies. I tried leaning it out thinking it was too rich and fouling it, but it did the same thing. Also when the tube is pinched from the tank to carburator it dies without increasing in idle which I know it is supposed to do, how do I adjust the low speed needle to fix this? I did notice one strange thing I hadnt seen before. When Throttle is applied, a air bubble that starts at the carburator and quickly grows to the tank meaning there isnt any fuel in the tubing, happens? What the Heck is going on here? Does this sound like a clasic symptom of a low speed needle which is too rich? I am not new to nitro cars but this problem is kicking my ass, PLEASE HELP!!! CLICK ON THE PICTURE IT IS A PICTURE OF MY TGR NOT A MOTOR ON A BENCH AS IS IN THE SMALL PIC.?????

Thats what I resorted to tonight. Reset all the needles, and did find the low speed needle was about 2 turns out too far (rich) replaced all the tubing with brand new, and we will see tomarrow.

I'm still waiting for the slow pokes at usahobbystore.com to ship my Fantom. You think I'd learn by now it's not always best to buy from the place with the lowest price. Not if you don't like waiting, that is. Good luck with yours. Be patient and don't get frustrated, you'll figure it out.

I hope so, sometimes it makes me wonder why I mess with these nitros. They kick ass when they work, but it isnt hard to figure out why some people hate them, all it takes is one tough engine that wont start. If you were planning on spending the whole day running it and having fun, and you never even get it started it makes me wish I hadnt even wasted the day fumbling with it! I recently bought a FG and everyone thinks ooooohhh too expensive! but if you add all the agrivation of nitro and all the piston/sleeves you buy, the initial investment with the FG is high, but maintenance is very low, gas is cheap, and you rebuild ever three years if you like. I just might sell my Nitros, after all I only have two of them now.

If everything worked the first time and kept going dont you think this hobby would be boring?
Why do you think we chose nitro? We bloody well knew about these problems. And we are man enough to face them and overcome them!
Without pain, there is no pleasure!
enjoy the hobby!

Do you have a starter box? If not, you may want to consider one. They're worth their weight in gold! The very first day I tried starting my RC 10, I was trying to start it using the pull start. Nothing but frustration. The next day I used the starter box, I had it running in 30 seconds. Problems can be detected much sooner using a box as well. If the engine isn't popping within the few seconds using a box, you know you have a problem with either the glow plug, glow plug battery, or fuel delivery problem. I wouldn't touch a nitro car anymore without a starter box, that's how valuable they are.

This might help:
New engines have excessive amounts of compression. What some suggest to do is to loosen you glow plug and while it is loose, start it. Then, once it is a little warmed up, quick screw it in and rev it.
I had this same problem with my latest engine. This was what was suggested, and it worked.
Hope it helps,
Kevin
P.S. Once you get it going well and past break-in tell us how you like you fantom! Also, tell us all about it!

Yeah, please keep us up to date... I'm considering the Fantom for a budget MT bet I'm working on....
I emailed Fantom, and they said, go with a torque pipe, and maby knock a tooth off of your stock clutch bell if it's a bit slow off the line...
I'm assuming the top end on it is where we'll see the 1.35 horses at their best...

Well man you know how it is.. it can be frustrating.. but make a checklist and make sure your not forgetting something..
Check your fuel lines
Make sure fuel is getting to the engine
Make sure your Glow plug battery is charged and that everything is working
Make sure your motor is not flooded
Make sure your glow plug is not fouled
IS your idle set screw set soo low that your killing it?
Needle settings ok?
At least your not fighting with a competition .21!! That thing kicked my ass before it got better about starting! lol
