RE: Tamjets Rafale Build
hi David, I really like this plane. Can you comment on the manual? Is it complete? I have examined this jet carefully and though it is pretty heavy the work is outstanding and strong. Do you think you could get the 8611 to fit somehow? \
There was a detailed explanation from Dribbe and Chris Huhn of their DX7 setups on another forum. You seem to have a good handle on how you want to do that.
What motor are you going to use?

RE: Tamjets Rafale Build
Goekeli, The Manual is not ready yet. I was told he has been super busy due to the Christmas rush in his shop but during the holidays he will work more on it. He is sending me all his pictures he has on DVD so that will be great, but the time I get it I will have in mostly done.
I have done the steering plate alittle diffrent from his, I moved it up about 1" and I am not cutting out the wheel and strut area of the plate. This way I have room to mount a nice and tidy radio install.
The 8611's will not fit. I don't see a real way with out doing any major mods to the wings.
I have an auto start RAM 1000 I am fitting in it.

Steering Installation
I cut out a resting brace for the steering servo plate, it's 5 3/4" X 1/2 wide with two half moon circles, this is where the screws will thread to.
I cut 3 squares that were 1" X 1" and on the third one I cut it in half diagonally to make triagle pieces, and the glued the squares to the triangle pieces. Next is to glue theses mounts to the forward retract bulkhead.
I drilled out the swing arm of the retract steering to accommodate a 4-40 hex bolt for the ball link hardware "this did not come with the kit"
I mounted the servo in the plate inverted with a 1/8 shim, I also used a 5" titanium pro-link for linkage.
I drilled out the four holes to attach the plate to the resting braces over there mounted area.

RE: Tamjets Rafale Build
Here my rudder installation. It is very easy and not complex at all and your hands are free to work....
I cut an opening at the bottom of the rudder about 1" from the main mounting pin. The hole is large enough for a DS821 which is about a standard size servo in dimensions. Then I cut 2 pieces of ¼ square plywood stocks for servo mounting. Then I measured the distance for the servo arm outlet and cut it about an inch long slot. The pictures should give you a good general idea of what I did. I choose this method because I felt like it would be more rigged than the preferred way.

Here is some pictures of my air valve and air gage install. Also pictures of the gear door air cylinders and doors. All this pretty simple and self explanatory.

RE: Tamjets Rafale Build
CARS thanks, I should have it done real soon, there is not much more than install the turbine now. I have been looking at it and trying to figure out the best possible way to mount everything. BTW I am going to get the pylons, tanks and missiles. I think it makes it really stand out.

Yes they do make her stand out. You may know this, the turbine has to be 1/2 inch up the engine mounts to get centered and if the pipe is a little to tight to get into the exhaust cones, just grind them very little on each piont that holds the pipe, almost nothing, we use the lower part of the bypass then the spacers then the engine and no bypass cover.
Let us know when she is going for her first flight.

David,
Excellent build job, looks like it should be ready to fly soon. Listen to Carlos, he has built a few demo Rafale's for our shop that have flown perfect without trim, he know's what he's doing. Good luck with yours, its a great flying plane and Im sure you will love it.

RE: Tamjets Rafale Build
Well I got the Turbine mounted and that was a bit to figure to do the whole bypass and all to center and all mount together. Since I am using a full autostart RAM 1000 I needed to modify the mounting rails, so I just remade them. had to cut out slots in the bypass to allow the mounting spots on the rails to protrude through the bypass also had to add a shim to center the turbine to the pipe. all worked out great. Now I just need to install the ECU and accessories.

RE: Tamjets Rafale Build
i thought the rear doors on the mains open backwards ( not to the side ?? ) .. they also act as an airbrake if set up this way , besides just being more scale ...

I should have this ready to maiden next weekend if the weather permits, thats the plan..

RE: Tamjets Rafale Build
Voy remember the Rafale is a delta wing and in its self is a brake. So I just need to find that sweet spot when landing. BTW so far it weighs 18.5 lbs and I still have to install the batteries, reciever and wings so I am hoping it will come in at 25lbs or les dry. I will post my final weight when I am finished.

Tam or CARS, Where do the pieces that are it the second to last pic go, and how are you are you guys mounting the refuling probe. I was going to use 2 pins and mount it through a hard block.

David
To be honest I have not mounted any of these parts but I do know were they go in case I have to mount them on the next one, the two triangular pieces go on the out side of the intakes at the midle of the curvature about one inch from the lip, the fuel probe goes on the right side of the nose at the beginning, right lower corner of the cockpit, I was thinking of making it removable for transport, I was thinking if building a base on the inside for reinforcement, 1/2" ply about 1" by 1" glued to the inerskin and having something the shape of the part or just one dowel secured from the inside by a crew about 1/2 long ( this is where the ply comes to play ) then you can slip the fuel probe onto it and secure it with a very small screw on the side facing down and for the last part I think that's the mount for the hook.
If all fails log into Airlainers.net and search for the Rafale, they have tons of pictures were you can see the exact locations of the parts.
I hope this helps.
PS: You did an excallent job on the by pass and the rest of the jet ( want to build one for me? ) Have fun with it and post the pictures of the maiden flight or video.
I just did a search and the very first picture gives you the location of the long triangular parts, the second pic gives you the location of the hook mount and the third pic. the location of the refuiling probe.

Hi guys,
Can anyone update me on flying caractericts of this beauty?? I am interested to know what to to expect on a short runway, 300 feet of paved runway located at the top of a hill at 5000 feet altitude. I am quite worried about landing speed and handling of the Rafale at slow speed.
Any input/ video would be appreciated.
Regards. Dany
