Smoke oil recipe

RE: Smoke oil recipe
I have tried a lot of different blends except the commercial smoke oils, and found out that a 50/50 mix of diesel and concrete form release oil woks the best. By far the densest smoke and definitely the one that leaves the longest lasting smoke trail.
I read in a above post that bio diesel worked well, so I'm gonna give that too a try alone and mixed with the form release oil.
Great tip!

This may also be worth a try,
ROSCO Fog Fluid
Part number FG 08301D
It is used in cabin evacuation training on full size aircraft. It is also water based so it should make everybody happy that is worried about the environmental aspect of other products. They have a laboratory in Ontario.

Thats the address on the side of the bottle, hope this helps.

When it comes to colours...
What is the recipe?
The Iriodin tip from Germany was a dead end. (Done that)
Light blue ore white smoke is interesting enough. But....

I use Superdri also. But, have also tried Corvus oil which is what the full scale aviation guys use, and it works as good. Maybe it's the same. Dunno.
Superdri is perfect white smoke where as diesel is more brownish. Superdri also seems to "hang" longer than diesel. Se picture below of a smiley face I painted in the sky with superdri/kingcat/tam smoke system.
Finally, as important as the actual smoke fluid, the design of the spray nozzle is important. Make sure your fluid is spraying in a fine mist when activated. (Test with water while you adjust the nozzle.) This will not only ensure thicker smoke, but you can also drop the pump voltage to get more smoke time. Currently getting 6 minutes of smoke on a 50 oz tank.

Jon wher do you obtain the Exxon Univolt 61 oil and what it is it's cost ,,,, also is it as messy ( Oily - Greasy ) as deisel is ... I've tried several form release oils, they all work well but make a real mess of the bottom of the aircraft ... might as well fly glow .... heven for bid

RE: Smoke oil recipe
I have a H9 Su-31 33% with ZDZ80 with a pits style smoke muffler and Sullivan Smok pump .. Futaba 9C .... When Mixing the Gear switch with mix No 6 It gives me 6 settings. At Idel I set it to +99 witch shuts the pump off while the gear swith is on. ie no smoke at Idle ... have tried all differant settings on the other 5 mixes ... + 36 to - 45. all seem to give the results ... is it possible to cut the amount of smoke fluid with the Higher throttle settings ( because of greater Heat ) ... Only got a couple of flights trying differant settings before the Bad Weather set in here in So. Wisconsin ... using a 32 Oz tank and the differant settings went from 4 minutes of smoke to almost 7 minutes .... If any one is using this type of Mixing I'd be interested to know what there settings might be and how many ounces of smoke oil per minute they burn ...

I found a concrete contractor that buy's a product by Unitex they call Q2 Form Release oil. They buy it in 250 gal plastic bottles for about $3.50 a gallon. They gave me a half galon to try said we'd talk about a price later if it works .... Boy does it Work, almost twice the smoke at the same settings I am using with the Hobby shop product (Aviation Smoke Oil) at $13.00 / gal. might be some draw backs such as smell or too thick ect,,, only got to try it for a few minuts on the ground today ( crappy weather here in SE wisconsin and all ) hope to get a couple of flyable days yet this year.

RE: Smoke oil recipe
The real trick is getting the oil into the exhaust in a very fine spray. Most of the variation is in the nozzles, pressure and injection location as much as it is different oils. Cutting any of the thicker oils with diesel or jet fuel does allow it to pump easier. If you're making a mess of the airplane's belly, you're not atomizing properly.
Has anyone tried our standard jet fuel (kero/turbine oil) as a smoke oil? Sure would be nice to not have two separate systems. I've run some kero through my full scale biplane smoke system and it seems to work fine. Might be worth a bench test...
I've played with the smoke dyes also. Scary stuff [:-] I left some red dye powder in a ziplock bag and it bled right through the bag and made a mess of the cabinet. A little bit goes a LOOOONG way. It also contains rhodamine which is highly carcinogenic.

I tried that when I used to use Jet-A and the results were very little smoke right after using diesel which did OK. I haven't tried kero tho. I am going to try some veg oil from the grocery store today.
Rob,
I had dense smoke like that on the ground but at speed it became much thinner.

RE: Smoke oil recipe
In order of what I have tried and works the best
1. B&B Smoke Oil
2. Super Dri
the last 2 don't really do much of anything
3. JetA
4. Disco smoke juice
I believe Super Dri and B&B are just a form of white mineral oil which is pretty cheap on its own.

MDW Super Dri get's my vote! You can buy direct from the distrubitor in Bridgeview Il.
If you have the means to handle a drum you can purchase a 55 gal. drum very reasonably.
