Default OFNA/New Era Style Tank Mod

Here's my take on the New Era style tank mod that uses an OFNA tank. I started with a piece of 1 1/2"x1/8" thick angle aluminum, then cut it down to form a fuel tank plate that is secured onto the truck via the screws that secure the engine plate to the TVP. Due to clearence issues that I've noticed with the New Era mod, my aluminum shelf actually sits 5/8 of an inch lower then the engine plate. This may cause high-centering issues, but I don't really drive on steep terrain that much. I also C-notched the fuel tank plate just behind the rear bolt hole to allow for room for the rear A-arm to flex if need be. I haven't had any issues with it yet, but it's only a tank old.

Sorry for the poor pics; I was too tired to take everything off after spending four hours in the 110 degree heat fabricating it.

Oh, and I almost forgot, what's a good pipe for the Savage with the stock F4.1 engine? I might get an Axial .28RR when this one wears out, but that's a long time away, hopefully. I shattered my stock pipe while testing out the new fuel tank mod, and the engine ran for a good 5-10 seconds at idle speed without the pipe on it. I'm thinking about getting the HPI Polished pipe, but if there is anything that performs higher then that one that's around that price range, I'm up for it.

Any pics showing how the aluminum piece is bolted to the chasis?

Not yet, sorry. If you read the last line before the photos (and before the "Click to enlarge" ), it reads, "Sorry for the poor pics; I was too tired to take everything off after spending four hours in the 110 degree heat fabricating it."

Okay, here ya go:

Thanks. I hear that the THS #8025 is an excellent pipe, but it's kind of on the [sm=greedy.gif] side. I don't really need much more of anything, because the truck has...I mean had good low end as well as a good top end. I could wheelie on command, and still outrun the Savage 21 I have which has a Dynamite Mach .26 and 16/48 Robinson Racing steel gears.

Looks good, but can you compress the rear suspension? It looks like the bracket is right on top of the arm.

As for a pipe, the HPI polished pipe is real good and is pretty cheap considering what you get.

There was only about 1/4 of an inch of clearence between the arm and the plate, but after I made that C-notch, the plate clears the arm by about half an inch.

Those pics are an illusion because it doesn't look like there's any clearance. Angles in pics will do that to you.[8D]

Just finished making the first and last three (probably) that'll ever be produced. You can see the fine craftsmanship and unique attention to each part (AKA, no two parts are identical, and one has a concave curve while the other two have convex curves, but it's all the result of one-off handmade production.) The prototype (pictured above) is retired after one use, and I'll run two of the three I made, and the last one will be a spare.

Pictured below are the parts (minus the original) and one of them mounted to a Savage 21 with inch extended TVPs, complete with the fuel tank.
