Default FOX COMPOSITES F86 Sabre

Wroughton this weekend saw the test flight of the 1st Fox Composites F86 Sabre powered by the Wren 44.
The model was built and tested by Steve Brett.

I was the caller for Steve on the flight and he reported minimal trimming.
The little 44 flew the model with great authority and excellent vertical performance.
The pics show the model and builder.
One other shot at the point of rotation but my camera failed to produce any usable flight shots (probably operator error). [&o]

Details of the model are on

Nice job Steve!

It was good to chat with you in Tucson last month. It may be an optical illusion, but do I detect a slightly blue coloration to the sky? As I remember, you told me that the sky is ALWAYS gray at your flying field!

Tailwinds,

John

You mean the Bifurcated intake?
Yep, not sure what that is, must be a mistake!

Wing tanks look good though [8D]

Or, the intake makes room for a scale cockpit.......the F-86 would look ugly without a intake duct.....

Vincent

I have checked up and the intake is correct.

It is how SJN shows it.

On the full size it is similar, i am told.
The air has to go around the cockpit area. (pilots legs have to go somewhere!).

The Hawk comes with intakes fully fitted.

Regards

Paul,

How is the performance with a Green 44? Was it 'tuned-up' to 195 k by Wren? Mine, although JHH with built up wing, flies great. What landing gear does the Fox Composite Sabre use? My NG retract has taken a beating and will need replacement soon.

Cheers,

As far as I know this is a standard Wren44 at about 8lbs of thrust, the Gold would be even better.

The UC is; I think Springair.
The model fly’s really well [8D]

Sorry Dave, you are just going to have to choose Sabre or Hawk...oh! What a problem...

What's the size of Fox composite F86, comparing to JHH's Sabre ARF? I have flown JHH's new ARF and it flew great with a Wren 44.

Hi,

Although it looks like a standard Wren 44 in my Fox-Sabre it has been upraded to 4.95kg (11 pounds) thrust. I am using springair 700 series retracts with Unitract oleo's.
The inlet duct is removable complete with the radio plate which is glued between the 2 inlets which run tight to the edge of the fuselage.
Just 2 screws hold the inlet assembly in place through 2 small right-angled brackets.

Hi John,

I have only just seen your comments, it was good to meet you too, trust me, the sky was blue but it wasn't as hot as Tucson.

GrayUK
On these Gold 44 powered models is there much residual thrust to deal with on landing approaches?
The reason I ask is that the new Grumania F-100 does not feature flaps so I wonder if it will require long flat approaches to land?
thanks,
Bob

Steve,

What does the wren 44 upgrade involve? how much did it cost you?

Thanks

Florent,

I had a slight problem with my Wren 44 when it was 2 1/2 years old, it was stopping when I throttled back so I sent it back to Wren.
Rather than repair it, Mike upgraded it. Wren don't actually offer a upgrade service for the 44 but I guess they no longer have the original specification parts available so any repaired turbine gets upgraded but they never replace the case for a gold case although you can end up with a turbine with the same power or more than a gold. For these reason there is no set price.

Steve

The 44 residual thrust is very low and not really an issue.
