RE: Forum Over Run With Crap
O.K., what the heck is wrong with you people. WHO CARES if the noobs want to know what would be best for them. They are NOOBS, as in NEW to the industry. They have little or no previous experiences with the hobby and are seeking advice from the older, more experienced people. Besides, joining a new forum can be daunting since there are so many new things and people you don't know. How do you think it would make a new person feel if they read this thread about how you guys hate dumb noob posts.
I have a solution, if anyone has NOT asked a dumb question, made a dumb post, or started a dumb thread as a noob (or "veteran"), then feel free to rant here all you want. We all do dumb things at one point or another and the last thing we need is some people flaming and bashing us when we do.
Just know that the mods will find this thread sooner or later and you will be driving people away from the hobby. This is ridiculous![X(][X(] (Wow! my fingers hurt!)

RE: Forum Over Run With Crap
The above point about newbie questions is:
THEY DO NOT SEARCH FOR THE ANSWER WHEN IS IS ALREADY THERE!
New threads are unnecessarily posted, though the answer is a few keystrokes away. This is illogical because a) you don't have to wait for people to answer, the answer is already posted b) numerous people have given feedback, making the answers practical from several viewpoints.
The expression of novice frustrations is warranted for several reasons.
1) Unneseccary posts add bandwidth to the site, ultimately slowing down everything
2) Buries pertinent posts/threads in nonsensical threads, allowing many topics to go unseen
3) Is reduntant to the point where several members express frustrations in threads such as this one, or due to the repetitiveness, folks will not reply to posts.

RE: Forum Over Run With Crap
I have been watching this thread since it first started. I have allowed it to continue but now I feel like it is time to express my opinion based on many years in R/C forums.
These are new people that are being discussed. They have somehow had their first exposure to the world of R/C cars and have no idea what they are doing and they want help. They find RCUniverse and the first inclination is to ask a question. Remember, they may also be new to the forums and probably don't know there is a search function. Even if they do know, they have no idea what to search for.
There is far more bandwidth wasted by posts that contribute nothing to the discussion such as "LOL", "X2", "Ditto", "^^^What he said" but it seems that nobody is complaining about that. These posts don't normally come from the new members but from those who have been around for a long time.
Who is to say what are pertinent posts/threads? Why should they be buried if there is a continued interest in them? Why should they go unseen by experienced members as the previously mentioned search function is available?
It seems that the majority of members who have been here for a couple of years forget that they started out the same way and probably asked the same questions in the same ways that cause these complaints. Speaking of redundancy, how often does this same topic come up and how often has it actually benefited the members? If just one member reads a thread like this and gets discouraged and leaves, then RCUniverse, its membership, and the hobby in general is hurt.
Too often I see more seasoned members help out new members by telling them to use the search function. I can just imagine him reading the statement and thinking, "What is a search function and where do I find it?" The well-meaning experienced member could say, "This has been covered numerous times in other threads. Use the search button in the upper right and enter 'XXX-Maxx' in the search block." In the majority of cases, the new member gets the answers he needs, learns to use the search function, and the thread ends at that point since no other discussion is needed.
I am going to leave this thread open a little while longer so that others can express an opinion but since this topic has been covered numerous times before, as you will find by using the search function, there is no need to rehash this issue any further.

That is an educated and reasonable response. You bring some very valid points about forum experience/inexperience.
In response to your response, and prompt responsiveness, which is appreciated in response, further encouraging the use of the "search" feature with suggections on use and keywords will certainly be a goal.
As afr as standing by my statement of burying posts, I must stand firm. There are several truly talented individuals with execptionally useful information sharing thier experience, much of which is lost in the "who is faster", "or which is better", etc topics.
Do the members of RCU want to see topics entitled "where can i race in SoCal", immediately followed by "tracks in Southern California"?. No, we don't. It's redundant and unneccessary. Because of it's redundancy, it's not pertinent.
As a forum manager, I would urge you to merge threads, ultimately making navigation of the forum much more efficient.
If you wish to simply tell me to kick rocks, no worries. But do understand that the fans make the band. The members and quality of the forum are what draw in new members, and paid advertisements that keep sites in business. A rookie atmosphere will filter out the experienced community, ultimately leaving you with a community of deaf leading blind, and the demise of an otherwise incredible site.

Remember that RCUniverse was established as a source of information for all aspects of R/C hobbies. If members do not post, there is no information. That alone shows the value that members have to RCUniverse. Members make RCUniverse what it is and they can take responsibility to improve the quality of the information by reporting threads and posts that they feel is not of value and take away from the resources. In doing so, members gain a feeling of ownership in these forums. If every member had that feeling, there would be no need for moderators.

RCUniverse was the brain-child of Marc Vigod after the overwhelming problems that eventually became the demise of RCOnline. This is his business and the income is derived from the advertising. He did not start RCUniverse as a business but rather because of his love of the hobby and his frustration with seeing RCOnline going down the tubes. It became a business because of the tremendous number of hours required to get it up and running while he still had daily expenses that had to be covered and a family for which he had to provide the necessities of life. With all this coming into play, Marc still realizes that this forum cannot exist without the members and their contributions. It could be thought of as a virtual hobby magazine. The writers of this magazine are the members, not paid staff writers. Without members to contribute, there would be no magazine. All members contribute whether it is by asking or answering dumb questions. Every member has an ownership in RCUniverse.

RE: Forum Over Run With Crap
Sorry if i am just reapeating someone else's point i havent got enough time to read all the posts...
I think that you should expect some noob type questions and try to help where you can as how else will they learn if we dont help people that are new to this then the sport will die out.
Maybe if there was a section for heavily inexperienced people it would solve the problem. But hay i'm not one to talk i have only had 1 nitro buggy before so im not exactly an expert.

Any of you ever been to pirate4x4.com?
Their Jeep section is split into two sections: Jeep Hardcore and Jeep Newbie
Buying your 1st rc vehicle vs. owning 5 to 10 of them and racing/bashing/tuning is alot like owning your first jeep vs. building/operating a purpose built rockcrawler.
The learning curve is not that steep but if you dont know anything, you have to ask alot of rookie questions to the pros. THAT is why they split the forum up because newbie questions like "whats the biggest tires I can fit under my stock Jeep" were clogging up the forum and the real questions like "what size DOM tubing should I use for my upper links on a stretched CJ" were alot less numerous and fell between the cracks.
I think there should be a newbie forum for all the simpleton questions

It's interesting that the people complaining about the state of the forum are those that have been here the shortest amount of time. Curious.

If you don't like these "dumb noob questions", then why click on them. It's easy as that... Don't click on the "dumb noob posts"; instead of making useless threads like this.

I dont mind dumb noob questions like how to remove tires, why dose my truck stop when i hit the brake, and so on. I usually give the person advice and try to help them. I am just saying the inflex recently of just completly thoughtless post that just say tell me what to buy with no info about what they are going to be doing, price range, or like 10 diff choices. Just pick a couple of trucks and ask peoples thoughts on them so there is free flow of ideas and everyone can learn a little about the diff trucks.

But really though, there are time when some post seem pointless but there have been several times when someone new (I hate "newbie") would give an idea that was good and if not for those type of post they would not even have posted at all. Yes there have been lots of posts that were of no concern to some but we all need to remember we all are NOT the same age here, nor do we all have the same knowledge.
Be nice to everyone and help when possible because you never know when some's child just may read this forum and one here could be a big help to a child.
Enjoy the forum and the hobby as well.
