So, what is it???
Been told it's a Tartan 70 twin. I hae been offered this Engine. It turns OK and has good compression, as It rotates freely and commpression is very good and I can just turn it by hand (no prop) through TDC with some dificulty. It looks pretty dirty but that's all it is - DIRT! Oh, price 30 GB pounds ($48) !
Anyone know where I can get some info???

Yep, that's the one. Useful looking beast and spec.
The guy who has it confirms it is the ST77. Looks interesting for what he is asking. I'll have another look.

that is a Super Tartan -and barring any damage - it can be made to run well -
there were ,any permutations of this basic engine - made by FOX in Italy-
with a custom reed bank and cleaned up ports and alky and oil - it made fair power -ad tuned exhausts and good power - BUT be ye informed ---unless someone will do all the labour for nothing - you can easily dump 200-300 into a proper conversion to get good performance-

Thanks for the info Dick. Emmm, may not happen . . . . the guy has started sorting through all His other gear in the garage, the sun is shining, he is getting re interested in R/C!!! He said something like "if I sell it". A week ago, He asked me if I was interested in it for 30 quid ( $48). I should have paid for it and taken it there and then! I'm not too worried, there's lots of other engines out there.

hi guys;
i just bought one from a guy who never ran it and it looks pretty awesome.
the specs i got with the engine call for methanol and castor.
i talked to someone who suggested synthetic (klotz) oil.
any comments?
has anyone tried a gas coversion on this engine.
i went up on that website and the engine prices out at $750.00 plus $200(+-) for the gas conversion.
i thougt of doing the conversion myself.
i was going to use it on a big lazy ace.

If I get the one up the road (picture on first of this thread), I'de probably also convert it to Gas. Emmm, think it would be earmarked for a BB (Big Bipe) also. What make is the Carb on these Engines?

OK- having been down this road - and having had the modified engines and having setem up with pipes etc-- here is my two bits worth -
they can be made to run - BUT just go buy a ZDZ60 - all in all cheaper and you will never get the power from the Tartan you get with a good 40-50 60 gas. also the 60 is very smooth - no problems on this 17 lb model.
this Tartan engine is about the weight of the 50 -60 class engines
We setup a TOC model in 90- with one of these - well modified -on pipes - it was flown to 2nd place by S Rojecki- I have one of the models - (I designed/ built them) still- but now with a ZDZ60 - and the power is much greater -
originally the Tartans turned about 9000 on 19x10 carfully shaped Max Daly props -
now I use a 24x10 MenzS or Mejzlic - rpms from 6000-7000 much beter recovery power .
