Yeah, I have seen the prototype both in the "pre-build" stage and the built stage. I'm lucky enough to live near Terry Boston (the builder) and he has been helping me with my 40% Extra this winter. The 35% is basically EXACTLY the same plane as the 40--except smaller. When you look at the plans, they look just the same. When you look at the parts, they look just the same.

I wasn't able to witness the test flights, but it sounds like they went very well. I have been so impressed with the build quality and fit/finish of my 40% that I'm sure the 35% will be a fun build, too. Can't wait to get this one in the air. My guess is that Carden won't be able to kit enough of these.

BTW, did you guys check out Frank's new 40%? He has single Futaba 5050's on the ailerons and on the elevators. It will be interesting to see how that experiment works out. A nice, much cheaper and simpler way to outfit a 40% birds, for sure.

I would NOT be a fan of a single servo on such a LONG aileron!

CAPtain232,

I tend to agree with you. I'm not saying this is going to work. In fact, I wouldn't want to be the test case here! I can't afford that kind of mistake. I am just dreaming of the day when we can get by with only 1 servo per surface and not have to worry about all of the problems associated with multiple servos. Well, time will tell. Hopefully, the results of this experiment will be publicized.

As far as the servos go, I like the idea of using 1 servo. What I don't really like is the speed. The 5050's are plenty for the surfaces but I'm kind of curious how Frank crammed one in each stab, my 2 9206's in the rear of my 40% had to be space close near the fuse because the stab is kind of thin. If money was no issue I would rather try 2 9350's on aileron, 2 9350's on the elevators and, of course, 2 5050's on the rudder. The 9350's seem like monster servos as far as specs go, they have a LITTLE bit more power than the 9206's but they're like .12 speed, I feel that would be very beneficial compared to my 9206's.

Kelly,

Yeah, I fly a bit with Frank because he lives near me. I'm going to give his stabs the "eyeball" myself next time I see his plane. I've also got two 9206's in each stab and they barely fit. I do wonder how he got the 5050's in there.

Maybe the 5050's are installed on their sides and not upright. Just a thought.

Right Thrust,

I know the 5050 servo has the torque, but that is not to total issue. When you span something as long as the aileron (likely to be near 40" on a 35%), the control surface itself could flex. The reolution to the issue I am speaking of is slower flight or stiffening the aileron.

Giant Scale- You're exactly right. When I went to bed last night that popped into my head. He say's is feels just like 2 9206's. But I'm sure it has better holding power being that it's digital.

Flexing is not an issue. I've personally tried flexing my 40% aileron with one hand at each end. The vacumm bagged sheeting on the foam core proves to be a VERY stiff control surface. I think Frank's idea is very interesting and it shows how the hobby is changing all the time. Maybe someone will put some Hitec 5735's in their plane and they will have .13 speed, although I am a Futaba man.

rcplanefan- How many aileron servos do you have?

Kelly,

I just have 2 in each wing--same as Frank's old planes. Terry Boston helped me a bunch in building this bird, and I followed his methods as closely as possible. I have personally seen Frank fly his 330 many times, and 2 on the ailerons seems like plenty--lots of roll rate even at high speed. Would 3 be better? Probably, but the headache associated with it (not to mention the addition of another $200) just didn't seem worth it to me. Have you flown yours? What do you have in the wings on yours?

Havn't flown mine yet. The covering is just about finished. I'm also running 2 9206's in the wings. If I see any blow back with full deflection I'll probably end up putting 2 9350 digitals per wing which have a little more torque but alot more holding power. I'm really looking forward to get this bird in the air and will post tons of pictures and a review when it flies.
