I've been experimenting with this method. Thinned (water) out aliphatic resin glue plus lots of talc, brushed onto silkspan. Sands great but you need to because when dry, it ain't flat - it has a minutely raised texture that needs to be leveled. But it sure fills the silkspan. 3 coats and I'm ready for the final paint job. Going to try Krylon over one coat plain old auto primer buffed with super fine steel wool.
Anybody else tried this? Suggest any changes or predict any perils I may have to deal with?
No dope smell (I love it but wife and kids ??) to worry about.
Thanks, Brian Paterson wood&fabric

I've done well with using a paintable slurry of spackling compound and water to fill the weave of the silkspan. Use the glue thinned with water to attach the silkspan, then fill the weave with the slurry. It works great, sands easy and gets very smooth. See attached example with both solid and open bay areas. Good luck, Dzl

Hey DZL, Thanks for the info - you're my kinda guy. I recognize the Hurricane (Brodak?). I got diesels too - old ones, and fly c/l, and RC too. Have not converted anything yet. That's a great idea for finishing using spackle.
With the aliphatic angle, I was wondering the extent of its fuelproofness. A coat of clear dope over it would fix it though. Thanks again, Brian

The spackling filler idea I stole from Tom Dixon. Whether he invented it or not, I don't know. BTW, the "Hurrispit" is a Freebird 4 which I bashed into what you see. I fly C/L glow and diesel; RC sport and Texaco (only for fun); and have started with electric park flyers now. Jack of all trades, master of none, that's me!

Thanks again DZL. If you like diesels, you'd like my Maloney 125 with Davis Diesel Head bought from a local guy. Has OS carb. I replaced the bearings and it's ready for action. I'll have fun starting it I'm sure. It's hard to get diesel fuel and/or the ether. They don't want to sell ether because idiots may put it on a rag and mug people.

There is a group in your part of the world (well, Canadians are a part of it, anyway) who specialize in diesel combat. They, or someone in the group, may be able to help you out on the fuel supply issue. The group is the Vintage Diesel Combat organization and is located at:

Good luck, Dzl
