Default 3W 100 not enough R's

I have an older 3W 100 non-toc, I'm running it on pennz air cooled 40-1 mezjlik 27x10, can't get more than 5900 out of it, no matter where I set the needles. Right now the needles are set at 7/8 out on the high side and 1 turn out on the low. Just came out of the shop (Aircraft intl) So I guess the timing is OK, it starts easy

Have you tried using 50:1? I'm using BelRay H1R, (switching to MC1 soon) and I've been doing quite well. Shouldn't matter which oil, but I would try 50:1. That might help.

Hi,

Were you running that prop before the engine went into the shop? How many hours on the engine? If you were running that prop and getting higher rpms before the shop visit, then the rings are not sealing or seating. The 3w-100 is a single ring piston so ring sealing is critical. Maybe it is time for a new set of rings. They don't cost that much.

Nope, they don't, and it's an easy and effective way to refresh an engine.
