ELECTRIC Savage pics
Yes, folks, I have finished, and have pics of, my electric Savage conversion. It has a Novak HV Maxx brushless system with a Robinson steel spur and Dynamite CVAs throughout to help handle the massive amount of torque it puts out. I kept the 2-speed Sav tranny for it's toughness (and the truck easily hits 2nd gear) therefore I also needed to keep the mechanical brake because the truck doesn't stop with the spur like in an Emaxx. So I hooked it up to the 3rd channel on my tx, built some 7-cell packs and here I am.
I can pop wheelies with this thing all day long and if I'm easy with the throttle, the front wheels stay down and it takes off like a shot.
To all those who said I couldn't do it- (nyah nyah nyah)

I don't know if it will hit the same top end as a nitro savage but it'll beat 90% of them off the line without a doubt. It was a lot of fun to build though it was hard work since I don't know what the heck I'm doing!

Sweet. What kind of run times you getting with it? I was actually thinking about saving up some money, well a lot of money and getting a Plettenberg setup for my SS I just finished putting together. I saw a video of one with a plettenberg motor and that thing rocked. I think there are still a lot of people that haven't seen what electrics can do and are amazed when they do see it. If only the manufacturers would catch up and give us high performance electric kits or even RTRs.

Depending on how I'm hitting the throttle I get between 10-15 minutes from 2 7-cell 3300s. I just bought 2 cases of loose GP cells and they're amazing compared to my crappy old stick packs. If you hit full throttle too quickly it will immediately backflip.
I did have to line the aluminum battery holders with lexan to prevent shorting, but it runs fine that way.
I haven't heard anything about the Plettenberg system other than its name. I can tell you that the Novak has MORE than enough power to haul around this big truck, even with the Truckzilla tires in the picture.

Nice job. I'm waiting on a backorder for a SS 4.6 destined for a E-conversion. Only diference is I am not going to use the savage tranny. I'm using a twin force tranny and battery holders. Nothing will be mounted above the top of the TVP's, so the center of gravity will be low. It's basically going to look like it came from HPI as an electric. If it works out, I may start selling the conversion.

Actually, I just ordered a camera today that takes digital videos, so look for vids by next weekend!
The rear battery is mounted to the inside of the rear bumper. It's protected, but still helps with the wheelies.

Why drop all that dough for a 4.6 if you are gonna tear out the engine and tranny anyway? See if you can find a .25 SS on clearance and get the same thing for a whole lot cheaper. Or just buy a roller from the Marketplace or E b a y.

cool, I dont think ill be converting my savage to electric, but its pretty impressive how fast that is. what you should do now is time it from a dead stop across 132 feet (1/10 scale quater mile). A stock savage .25 with stock gearing will do it in about 4.4 seconds at about 30 mph. it would be interesting to see how close they are.

Thanks, great idea. Did you clock your own Sav? Where'd you get 4.4 secs as an average?

OUTSTANDING! Plus you can run it in your living room in the winter time! Did you try to hang the batt packs from the sides of the tvps? I was curious if they fit. Man, that would piss my wife off jumping my savage from upstairs. She hates it when I jump it off the deck (it leaves a little trail that disappears after a few minutes). Great work.

RE: ELECTRIC Savage pics
I might try that. a plastic battery tray would save weight and I mighty be able to mount it on the side to keep the front end down for more on power steering. Thanks for the tip.

I got the 132 foot info from an old rc car action article, but I cant find it now. all I know about it is he was using a stalker ATS system and had a stock savage. i dont know what fuel he was using or anything, but i figure thats a good general reference point. I was thinking you could just measure about 130 feet and time it from a dead stop with a watch. you wouldnt get anything exact but you could at least see if they are close.

RE: ELECTRIC Savage pics
this is an old post but... I am conv. my savage to electric and I am going to get the mamba monste max which comes out first quarter next year. I will use 16 cells mounted on the side. im thinking elite 4000's. that will get serious runtime.
