50 cc Extra 260 conversion
Well last night I was complaining that there is a lack of info...
I guess it's not fare to say if I don't share some of my porject
So,
I just converted a 50 cc extra 260 to electric
Just thought I'd share my Conversion.
The plane is a Dietrich 30% Extra 260 it has an 87" wingspan.
I used a neumotor 1521 1.5y geared motor, spinning a 24x12 APC Prop. Speed controller is a CC 110. Batteries are thunder power 12s 2p 5000 mh packs. Servos are all JR 8711's with a DS 8711 on rudder. I'm running two JR 2150 6v Ni-metal RX packs and JR heavy duty switches. RX is a 12 channel PCM futaba
All I really had to do was build a shelf for the batteries and use standoffs for the motor mount. It was pretty straight forward.
The plane is just under 18 lbs with batteries ready to fly. I have 9 oz of lead in the nose to keep it nose heavy for the first few flights. Now that I have a few flights on it I'm going to start removing the weight. If I can lose them all I'll be at 17.5 lbs.
I'm pulling 98.86 Amps, 4131.59 Watts, 38.89 Volts!
That puts me at 229.53 watts per pound or 5.54 HP much more than a
DA 50 Gas engine..
The power is unreal! guys at my club couldn't belive it was electric
Here's a few pics

So the next question for you electric wizards out there...lol
With this power settup I would love to try a topflight 1/4 P-47 with sound system
I think it would be around 24 pounds... with 4130 watts of power that would be around 172 pounds per watt...
do you think it would fly well? it seems like it would be great.. or do i need more power?

RE: 50 cc Extra 260 conversion
Ron,
That would be more than enough power for a 1/4 P47. I have a 1/5 scale Hellcat that weighs 12 lbs. and am using a motor that puts out 1800 watts. That's 150 watts per pound and the plane is great. Lots of power and I get about 8 minutes flight time on a 8S pack. I think anything over 120 watts per pound on a warbird is more than enough. A little more power for a P47 or P40 as their wings have higher wing loading is always a plus.
Going to start a electric conversion on a KMP Stuka soon too. Going to use a 2000 watt motor on it. Should be lots of power as the plane will weigh under 13 lbs.

Ron ... great to hear the data on your 50cc ... I am keen to purchase the NEU for my MidWest CAP 232 80" as I need more than the mere 2,000W that I have from the DualSky motor. She flies fine but then I cannot get near unlimited verticals for me to pull nice Hammer Heads or big loops. I should be ordering the NEU 1521 soon! I read it gives about 28 lbs thrust! Cannot wait for that on my 14.5 lbs CAP.
I love your battery tray! Hahahaa ... its really kewl. Here are some pics of my CAP.
