RE: G4 and a big monitor?
I'm running AFP on a Dell 24" at 1920x1200. Obviously, AFP doesn't have the latest graphics but it looks good on my system. What resolution are you guys getting on the LCD tvs? 1080x720? That's about 1/3 the resolution of a good monitor. I'm sure it looks impressive because of the size, but aren't the images chunky?

High end HDTVs are 1080p which is actually a frame resolution of 1920×1080. Of course everything is relative, a smaller screen and a higher resolution will look sharper obviously, however that doesn;t mean that anything else looks chunky. No one ever describes the PS3/Xbox 360 or Blue ray DVDs as looking "chunky". I like the bigger size so that it is easier to see the aircraft at a distance.

I just realized that the 1080P is the vertical resolution, not the horizontal. I'm sure 5 years ago when I bout my Wega I knew that, but there's too many details to remember these days, ya know?
1920 x 1080 would be nice.

Chris: Do you feel the 24inch makes it easier to follow the aircraft at a distance (compared to a 17 or 19, for example)?
Do you view the 24 as close as you would view a much smaller display?

I actually sit about 3-4 feet back. I don't like being right up against the monitor. I have a hard time with depth perception in the sims. It seems like you can either use a high zoom and have a good view of the plane or use a low zoom and have a reasonable view of the field, but finding the right balance between the two is hard to accomplish. Right now I'm working on pylon racing and keeping on the course can be a challenge.

RE: G4 and a big monitor?
Ok, I need some help here. Just bought an HP LP3065 monitor (30 inch), it has max resolution of 2560 x 1600. I'm using Intel E6750 dual core @ 2.66GHZ on Asus P5N32-E SLI mainboard, 4 GB of RAM and NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 512 for graphics card.
G4 looks great but my frame rate is only 4 per second, so it's quite jerky. But man, you can see the airplanes far away!
Does anybody know what tweaks I can do to improve my frame rate?
Thanks.

RE: G4 and a big monitor?
I have a 42 inch Visio that I ran the G4 on and it worked just fine, I did smoke a 5550 and then put a 7600gs pony card with 512 of ram,and have had no problems since. The game works fine but im running a FX-55 athalon at 2.75 gig. The LCD screens I hear dont put as much of a strain on the video cards as the plasma, like I said, I smoked a card running a plasma.

If you have an Nvidia Geforce card they usually have software on their site to peak and tweak their cards. But the card has be be able to be tweaked. Some of them come out of the shop peaked and tweaked and cannot be messed with. You can check any improvements with the 3dmark software that will run your card though its paces. As you peak and tweak you must also set the voltages higher in the motherboards settings. Here is where you can do dammage to your stuff so be careful and do it one step at a time checking your card for overheating. Heatsinks and fans are a must for overclocking. Bumping up your CPU also does much for increasing a video card.

RE: G4 and a big monitor?
For others who, like me, are staying on the smaller end of the scale; I picked up a 22 inch lcd which improved the details considerably, and I use some "zoom" function (the "+" and "-" keys) to make the plane a bit larger.
Frame rates dropped significantly from the 15 and 19 inch monitor rates cited above.
Now I learn that my vendor sold me NVIDIAs lowest end graphics card. I will have to replace that to get rid of the jerkiness in the display.
