RE: GP Super Sportster EP Glow Conversion
just an update guys, I recently decided that I am going to convert mine to glow as well. I am sick of barelly getting off of the ground and being at near stall the hole time. I did the research and went with a .32 because its lighter (being a .25 thats boared out 'less metal'). I will post picks and give all flight results. Should be airborn late next week. Thanks.

I can't knock the desire to convert to glow, but if the criteria for choosing the glow conversion is merely performance, you may want to take a look at changing out the motor/esc and battery. Especially if you already have chargers, etc.
I put in the equivalent of a .32 engine in mine, keeping it all EP, and now I obtain 25 minute flight times, while the plane leaps off the runway.
It actually weights less than the stock plane this way.
Guapoman's thread had some suggestions. I started a new thread where I posted my rather inexepensive configuration.
I spend about 80.00 for two packs of batteries, and about 90.00 for a new motor and 60A ESC>
Performance is incredible now.

Get rid of those metal screws holding the wing on and you won't have to worry about it coming loose again. I knocked out the blind nuts, tapped it for 10x32 nylon wing bolts and now have no problem with the bolts coming loose.

mred33: I just read your suggestion about the nylon wing bolts and went and did it. Great idea.
Here is mine:
Magnum 30 4-stroke, APC 10x5, 6 ounce Sullivan slant tank. Flies great! Much better than the stock setup. It's also 6 ounces lighter than the stock setup. I replaced the wimpy gear with an aluminum set I had lying around. Still trying to get a reliable idle. The inverted engine might not be the ideal setup, but it sure looks nice.

RE: GP Super Sportster EP Glow Conversion
i did the conversion before anyone, like a couple of years ago and had poor results, after 35 flights, the plane vibrated apart in air, and i reinforced everything. i used a gms .32 and boy did that thing fly, only took it full throttle once of fear of the frame failing, boy did that thing move

As I told you by email, I do not recommend that you mount the engine inverted. I have never gotten it to run well that way. I will redo the conversion to side mount the engine as soon as I get some spare time. The photos would not help you because the engine mount and tank position will change for the side mounted engine.

25 minutes is nominal, with throttle management it can go over 30.

RE: GP Super Sportster EP Glow Conversion
A friend of mine an I are getting ready to do the conversion the power plant we choose was the OS 25 fx I was a little worried about the la as I have had the fp line an could never get the fp's to hold a needle adjustment.
It appears that the orginal mount should work for the 25 has anyone tried it I will get some pic's of the project once we get started

RE: GP Super Sportster EP Glow Conversion
What I want to know is will putting a .25 nitro engine make it fly too fast to fly at a small field, I.E. landings and takeoffs with stall speed? I might think of giving this kit to a buddy who will solo this spring on his trainer, if it's not going to be a rocket with a .25 os max.

RE: GP Super Sportster EP Glow Conversion
I've flown it with a electric motors that output the equivalent of both a .25 and a .30.
It will be controllable, but bear in mind that it does need some airspace.
Mine carves up arcs in the air identical to a good .46 glow plane.

RE: GP Super Sportster EP Glow Conversion
We havn't started our build as of yet but can only imagine that it will be a little hot for the novice the orginal ep setup it was very underpowered but came in fast an needing some room.
I've been tossing around the ideal of putting on some airbrakes on the landing gear much like the hangar 9 pts mustang

RE: GP Super Sportster EP Glow Conversion
No need.
While you may have brought it in fast, the Sporster can continue to fly right to a stall, at which point it noses down in a gentle manner.
If you keep the weight in line, it comes in very slowly...
I've thrown two 11v 3800mAh LiPo packs in it ( about 10oz each ) and it barely notices the extra weight... yet it lands nicely.
The only times I've had to come in faster than a crawl have been in winds.
If anyone has G3, check out the SS EP plane available on the RF forum pages to see how it lands with a higher power setup.
