It is a rumor that the TRX 2.5 is supposed to get up to 50,000 RPM's. I personally don't believe it though.

80,000 RPM? yes, from a turbine, and MUCH more also!

Oh, absolutely, if you're talking about a turbine Like Todd said. Those turbine aircraft engines reach about 150,000 rpm, about twice what your friend said. But those aren't reciprocating internal combustion either...

I'd really like to know why people base the best engine off how many RPM's it can pull, because the fantoms are good yes, but definately not the best.

People base engines on their RPMs for 2 reasons:

Normally it means more options for gearing. If you have a engine with 31,000RPM if you want any kind of speed your going to need to gear it really tall, and acceleration will suffer somewhat. If your engine is 40,000 you can use shorter gearing and still maintain a high speed while keeping acceleration good too. More RPM usually thet better unless the stroke is so short it causes power and torque to suffer.

I have the trx 2.5 in one of my rustlers and it does rev REALLY high...I don't have any way to give you an exact rpm but I can tell you it sounds much higher than any engine I've heard so far...(haven't heard a fantom wind out)

The TRX 2.5 uses only top-grade, ultra-high performance, large diameter ball bearings. Top quality bearings improve power by reducing parasitic friction. The rear engine bearing uses a high-tech composite cage for reliable operation at engine speeds that approach 50,000 RPM!

Talking of RPM's, is it possible to over rev a nitro engine? Or are they like diesel engines which self limit?
Not that important, just idle curiosity.

It IS possible to overrev a 2 stroke, although while driving with the wheels on the ground , it would be hard, and maybe impossible. The way you could overrev a 2 stroker though is: reving the engine with the wheels off the ground, after starting it, or after a wreak, if the wheels were facing up.. By spinning the drivetrain and wheels with no resistance on the wheels, would be the sure way to over-rev a 2 stroker.

Ahh thanks Todd, looks like I'll have to be careful. My Pirate spends more time upside down than rightway up with my driving skills...lol.

As long as you dont gas it full throttle for a extended period while upside down, you should be okay. Sometimes I rev my buggy engine in short blips when I flip it upside down if I am a long way away and I know the engine will die before I can get to it, so I dont have to start it again. This is fine as long as you dont peg the throttle full out! Its just the freewheeling full throttle, that seems to stretch the crank rod until it snaps. LOL
