Best prop for 3D
Hi,
I got the 3D Mayhem and stuck in OS 120 AX. What would recommend the best prop for 3D flying. OS recommend Max 15x12 to 16x8.
What I am told lower pitch props are better. So would a 16x5 better then 16x8 or perhaps a Zinger 17x4?
Thanks

Qwazzy 123:
Think I would start with a APC 17 X 4W, and go to the 16 if it seems like too much prop, or any indication of overheating. In flying 3D, you want the engine to spool up without hesitation, and hold the upper rpms easially. A normal 3D'r is happiest just loafing around at slow speeds, a new learning curve for many who think WFO all the time is fun. The typical 3D machine is constructed very lightly and should not be horsed around at full throttle if you want it to stay togeather. ENJOY

Although that answer is mostly right, I'll add that on a 2 stroke wood props spool up much faster due to their lighter weight. A quality wood 17x6 OR 16X6 like a Xoar would be great!

RE: Best prop for 3D
I have had at least 4 engines in that size and the best prop for 3-D, especially hovering (and dont forget speed control) is by far the Zinger 17X5. I know Zinger has a bad rep for lacking ultimate pulling power, but thats not where its at with 3-D. Quick spool up as previoulsy mentioned and a good clean transition in the mid range is all important. You can even use APC prop to trace over the Zinger tips, then trim the tips to match the taper for even better spool up.(unloading the prop). Balancing of course is a must.

I am currently flying a OMP Yak with a 120 AX and like the APC 16x6 W although I have used the 16x4 W as well. Both spool up noticeably quicker than a 17 in prop.
I might try the 17x5 Zinger though with the tip mod. But on my light Yak I have more power than I need.

It has worked well for me, I like to have vertical control in hovers to the point where one click of throttle up, the plane will climb slowly, one click down & it drops slowly. Its important when you are DOD "s from the ground. Of course, none of the ablove is possible unless you have clean transition.

I have to agree with the 17x6. I have a 120 ax on a Harrier 90 and use a 17x6 APC. It seems to be dead on for 3d performance. I am going to try a 17x6 wood prop soon. I'm sure it would be even better.
