RE: duratrax temp guage
reasonably accurate
and a good price
be sure to set the emissivity
i use one and have not had issues
i'm sure the high dollar automotive, etc ones are more accurate
but for rc use
you really don't have to spend that much

surfaces radiate heat differently based on many factors
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emissivity
ir temp guns need to be set to read different surfaces to get an accurate temp
the instructions that come with your temp gun will explain how

RE: duratrax temp guage
I bought mine since it was cheap and I was not sure if I would use it very much. Since then I use it all the time and I am always learning of new ways to use it. My advice: Don't buy it. I only did because I did not know any better. Even for electric you need a good and accurate temp gun. Buy something of quality, that is accurate and does the job fast. I am upgrading mine.

RE: duratrax temp guage
There is no set up it is pretty basic really. This one is does far more http://www.tempgun.com/order.html#pe3
And this is why you want a good quality temp gun http://www.rcracingusa.net/tempgun.htm
And that is just half of the uses for electric only.
I also use it to set the peak threshold on my peak charger. If it peaks to low (below 120f) then I set it higher. If it peaks to high (above 130f) I set it lower. I also check my Lipo packs when there done to make sure they will not explode next time I charge them. I use it on my Gasoline powered Baja to. A good temp gun is a great tool to have, and it is vital when gearing a brushless RC car. You will be fine with your purchase though it just takes a little longer to use. You can always buy a better one later.
