Disaster with my shrike. need another kit!
I have bad news for shrike commander lovers. I had a very bad first test flight with my MOdaire shrike commander. As I lifted off, I made a bad decision, to commit to a lift off. Best we can tell I did not have enough RPM's ( they tac'h'ed ok) and Might have been a bit tail heavy. Long story short, A total loss exept for engines and hardware.
(If you don't wana crash-em, don't build-em)
Well I'm not letting it get me down. The only problem is, Modaire is not producing the kits any more. His whole tooling shop for all his twin designs is for sale. $60.000........a bit out of my price range!!!
So here is the question for all. Does anyone have one of his shrike kits and not the ambition to built it. I would be interested!! Any response to this request could also be directed to my [email protected]. Yes I know, Kinda ironic and all .my screen name and the crash and all!
Well to all have a good flying season. Thanks ...Mike

Michael:
Last time I talked to Joe Bridi he still had one of his Shrike kits, he'd be happy to sell it to you. Call him at (310) 326-5013, do it in the early evening.
Next time be more wary, the Shrike has a nasty stall/spin tendency if the air speed is allowed to decay. (Now he tells me! Haw. Sorry.)
Bill.

RE: Disaster with my shrike. need another kit!
Mike,
Sorry for the loss of your Shrike. I hope you will find another kit.
How about the amount of wash-out in the Modaire wing? I have a 1/5-scale Shrike, built
from Palmer Plans. My plane is stable in the air, with no bad habits at low speed, and as
the Modaire Shrike is 1/4-scale, I think it should fly even better
Like the full size, the Palmer Shrike wing has NACA 23012/23015 airfoils and 6,5 deg. of
wash-out (+3 deg. at wing root, -3,5 deg at wing tip) The CG is now around 27 % MAC,
with the landing gear retracted. (That makes 17% from leading edge at wing root)
I have flown it with the CG further back. The plane was sensitive in pitch, but there were
still no signs of tip stalling.
Wingspan is 117â€, weight 26.5 lbs. Scale performance with OS 91†four strokes, swinging
APC 14-8 props.
According to info found at the links below, the full size Shrike has excellent low speed
performance as well, and is one of the most docile twins ever built. (even on one engine)
Good luck on your Shrike project.

You hit the nail on the head Leo! the washout is the secret to keep these birds from flipping over as they do at slower speeds, the Bridi kit obviously didn't have enough and also because of the tremendous taper toward the tips (and extremely thin airfoil), the Reynolds numbers were extremely scarse, to say the least, a larger model would benefit in this respect, if building another model in this size I would definetely cheat on the type of airfoil and its thickness and also increase the area at the tip, it can be done easily without much aesthetics difference.

RE: Disaster with my shrike. need another kit!
Hey thank's guy's. for the info. I guess I just should have done more research before trusting the Kit set-up. I am going to do another big one of the same design, but with your washout tips and more power. I fly off a grass field so G38's probably were not enough to get me out of that climeout trouble. I'm going to give it a rest for a few months, but then start back at it. there are many things I can save from the wreck. so a lot of the work is there and saves me starting from scratch.
Thanks again for you sympathy.
Mike

RE: Disaster with my shrike. need another kit!
Good morning, all! I'm pleased to announce that I have purchased all of the molds from Modaire Industries, and I estimate that I will begin making kits this winter (Dec. 2006). I will be making the Modaire Aerocommander, F7F Tigercat, F-82 twin Mustang, and a P-51H, plus a few others TBA. I am still finalizing details of my new company (such as a NAME!), website, pricing, shipping, and other details, but the company will be located in NW Iowa. I do not plan to alter Charlie's kits in any way at this time (fiberglass fuselages and foam core wings). In the future, however, I may offer other kits or variations, keeping in with the theme that Modaire Industries is famous for.... BIG TWINS! Please feel free to contact me here if you have any questions or suggestions, and I'll be back online as soon as I have any updated information to share.
Best,
Jim Oosterhuis
