Buying Stampede or Rustler XL-5
Hey,
Anybody with a xl 5 stmapede, your thoughts are welcome. I bought my tmaxx a year ago and am loving it. My younger brother also loves it and wants his own hobby level rc truck. He is only 11 and he wants the stampede. Its all he talks about. His budget is up to 250.
So this post was for info about the xl 5 stampede only. I would like to know about stock performance because he will most likely never mod it. On rc planet it comes with a 3000mah venom nimh battery, MRC Super Brain 820 charger. What i want to know its max speed possible with that battery charger combo, and performance on a backyard track. Correct me if i'm wrong but i think the stampede rtr comes with an optional pinion gear? How hard are those to swap out. Thanks and here's the link.

Now i am looking at the Rustler also. It is faster but i need to know if it can perform on a track and if electrics are even worth getting unless they're not brushless with lipos.

I like mine. I run a 4200mAh 7 cell battery in mine. it has nice speed and with this battery it will wheelie from a dead stop with full throttle and good traction. The only thing I changed in mine was I put a RPM front bumper on it and put an aliminum idler gear in the trans, the stock one will strip out if he tries to do alot of reverse/ foward wheelies. The truck is very tough I have yet to break any of the parts on it yet. I jump it all the time off a skate board ramp and some of the landings have been pretty hard on cement. GREAT TRUCK !

I have never had it on a track. I just run it next door to my house in an empty dirt lot.

I do not know the actual speed, but it rips pretty good. It probably goes around 30mph. The speed Traxxas rates it at is with a 7cell battery. It will go alittle slower with a 6 cell battery. I think that your son will not be disappointed at all. Good luck in your purchase.

is the included pinion gear easy to install and does it actually make the pede have a higher top speed or just quicker acceleration?

Pinion gears on electric are super easy. Remove the cover (2-3 screws) remove the set screw on the old pinion gear, slide it off the motor shaft, loosen the motor, reverse process with new gear. All you have to think about is mesh, which is just take a slip of paper, fold it over, and place it between the pinion and spur. Mash them together good and tight, then tighten your motor back. Pull out the paper, and your mesh should be set. Just enough space to audibly click the gears by hand. You'll have to take a wheel off just for easier access with tools. All in all a 5 minute process. No more than 10 minutes if you've never set a mesh before.
As far as Stampedes go, they're a pretty top of the line model for 2wd electric monster trucks. Mind you, that class has it's limits. It won't turn as well as your t-maxx in the dirt. On the pavement it'll be a bit more likely to flip because the suspension isn't as plush. But in the dirt that won't be a problem, cause the all terrain style tires will break traction long before it'll slip (if you were to switch it out for off road racing tires, that'll be a different story... but I wouldn't do that). The truck is known for having a decent attitude jumping, for it's type. Will it be as fast in any way as the rustler? No. But the advantage is it'll handle rougher terrain better.
I had an earlier version of the MRC Super Brain charger, and it's a perfectly fine sport level charger.
The only thing I'd recommend is if he can afford it, get a second battery. www.boomboombatteries.com has a pretty decent price on 4200 mah batteries. But yea, the biggest downer for having an electric is only having one battery charged.

does anybody know anything about the Xl 5 RUSTLER? I know its faster but can it handle an offroad track that is homemade with a tractor. Or does it just bounce all over the place because it has little center ground clearance?

RE: Buying Stampede or Rustler XL-5
can somebody please help me out. I can't decide if the electric stampede is going to be worth the near $200. I have never had an electric hobby level car, only my tmaxx 2.5 which i love. Do electric have good shocks and do they last long and do they need to be broken in somehow?
Thanks
