Default Crackerbox rudder question

I would like to know whats up with the rudder standoff brackets on crackers. Are they necessary? I see different setups out there. Pivot bkt only w/rudder, 3" standoff bkt w/rudder. Straight rudders, tapered rudders. Rudders drilled for water cooling, undrilled rudders. I really dont know which setup to use. The only thing that I KNOW I need is a skegged strut and the angled trim tabs. I plan on racing this boat. Just got the engine yesterday and I want to get all the hardware together before the boat shows up so when it does, I can bang it out over a weekend.

Thanks!! John

The rudder can't stick out more than 4", nothing on the transom can, get it as close to the 4" mark as you can. (trailing edge)

Yes, get the rudder near the 4" mark and let her run. The farther back the rudder is, the easier it will be to control. If you put the rudder right on the transom, it will be very sensitive to small rudder movements. I think tapered vs non tapered is just a "look cool" issue because I see absolutely no difference in the handling of my cat or crackerbox when I used a straight blave vs a tapered one. Granted theres probally a reason but it was nothing worth noting as I am using both styles

Hey thanks for the info!! Webdr, a couple of nights ago I sent you a pm asking about the rc boatworks cracker you have. How do you like it? For me its a toss up between the boatworks and the insane.

That's not a crackerbox hull. WAY too much "V" in the bottom to be legal. And yes its too far from the transom as well.

I made that rudder by hand and it is only 5 inches long total lenth. I think that is not to long. As i see a lot of 5 inch rudders. Used a file and drill to make that rudder. Simple shop tools. Made it in about 3 hours. And i don't have alot of v. It's the same old mono everyone builds. Here is a pic of what rudder i made.
