Default Twin Comache

Purchased a set of plans from AMA for a twin comanche, 60" WS, calls for a pair of 25's....the plan is for a CL model but I figured it wouldn't be too hard to convert to a RC model (basically add ailerons and flaps) Anyways, any advice on engine size? I've heard the lines on a CL model have alot of drag and need bigger engines to pull them through the air...or should I just stay with the 25's that the plan calls for?

Any adive/suggestions is greatly appreciated

hello dschroeder

i have converted a U/C nobler in to a R/C and few thing you must take in consider .

1. in U/C plan the distance between the elevator and C/G is shorter then in scale or R/C
2. in U/C the inner wing is longer then the outer wing .
3. in U/C the wing profile is thicker so it creat more drag and slow the plane .
4. in most U/C the attack angle is on - 0 , that is no good for R/C

you can use your plan as good basic start but no more .

good luck

I just got a set of plans for the 70" Joe Bridi Twin Comanche. It is a beautiful airplane, always loved them. I plan on putting a couple of 46s in it, probably Magnums and a set of Dave Brown retracts. Also looking into a rudder gyro in case of an flame out, the gyro will be alot quicker than me.

It may be easier to buy the plans and build this one than trying to convert a control line plane, plus the bigger plane will be easier to fly. 46s don't cost much more than 25s. The plans are on epay for around $20, nice, clear full size set. I may even work on a drawing 20% larger one but I'll build the 70"er for now. Keep us posted on your progress.

Rick....Just ordered that set of plans off ebay, came out to $19 with shipping. It'll alot less hassle to build it from a RC set of plans rather than converting a CL model

Yes, the R/C plans would be the way to go, you'll have a better flying and handling plane with the 74".

I ordered my wood last week, going to be a summer long (and then some) project. I would have bought the engines too but I'll have to wait until that big, gaping hole in my wallet left by my purchase of a new OS 200 heals up some. Still got plenty of work to do before I will need the engines.

I noticed a couple of unscale parts of the plans. First, the nose is much more pointy on the real plane than what the plans show. Second, the fuslage line from just behind the windshield to the fin is slightly curved, mostly at the cabin area. The plans, and some models I've seen, show pretty much a straight line from behind the windshield to the fin, kind of like the old Cessna 310s.

The lines of the Twin Comanche are so beautiful I am going to seek out some 3D views of it so I can model the lines as close to the prototype as possible. I'll let you know the changes I'm going to make.

Also going to make a mould for the epoxyglass cowlings, I can cast up some extras up for a reasonable cost. I'm pretty sure both sides are identical.

I wouldn't try the single servo/bellcrank aileron set up either, dual aileron and throttle servos a must. I'm drilling lightening holes in most parts and not sparing the sandpaper to keep the weight down. Monokote finish too.

Soon as I get started I'll post an occaisional pic of the inevitable slow progress. Please do the same so we can compare notes.

I probably won't start mine till this winter, have too much other stuff going on to work on it now (besides the flying weather isn't too bad either) anyways...let me know about the plan changes/cowl molds

I'm thinking about putting a pair of OS 46AX engines on it
