Default RE: 3D Plane for a Saito 100

Thanks for that explanation, it makes sense. I just figured the Mini servos into my budget instead of the 9001's. I kind of wanted all of my control surfaces drooping on the flight line, though I realize that's not the most important thing . They don't sell coreless mini's do they??

Either way, I found a Hitec HS-985MG Coreless servo for the rudder that I'm seriously considering now. .18 sec and 133oz-in torque, metal gear and coreless. The HS-965MG is high speed, putting out .13s and 103oz-in. The 985 has a .13 speed rating at 6v, but doesn't provide a torque rating at 6v. Problem is they're $70. Any other alternative? I kinda wanted to keep the whole set-up under $500 (excluding engine, I've got a NIB Saito 100 here).

I also found a Futaba S3305 for the rudder. It's half the price of the other two. It's speed rating is .20sec and its torque output is 124oz-in. What do you think, is the servo speed worth THAT much money? I mean, the faster one (by .7s) is twice the price of the slower one. They also have a more torque...but at 124oz-in I don't think that's really a factor. Anywho, what do y'all think?

If you want digitals go with 5625s. Servo city has them on sale now. I have these in a bigger plane for ails and eles and they are pretty quick on 6 vts. http://www.servocity.com/html/hs-562...tal_speed.html Speed is very nice but below .15 it should be fine.

Servocity sells 695MG's at $50....$20 less than at TowerHobbies. It's got 144oz-in torque, it's speed is .10. The only problem is I noticed that Servocity says it only rotates 90*...and I always thought that servos rotated more than 45* each way, 90* total. Is 90* total the normal amount of travel? If so, I can handle the coreless 695 at $50.

90 degrees is normal. If you can afford 50 each I would go with the digitals. I have 5625s, 5925s, 5985s and 5955s and I wouldn't go back. You won't notice the speed difference between .10 and .13 or .14. Just my opinion. Oh and I would also run 6 vts on either. I am actually running 6.6 A123s on my bigger stuff now and love it. recharge in 5 minutes.

A123 would be nice, but A123 involves another charger! No thanks. I have two planes and a 10c on my serious to-buy list at the moment...I'll wait. Oh, and a Sig Wonder after those!!

Also, why are digital servos so much better than analog coreless? I've heard that the coreless servos are much faster than their cored counterparts when it comes to changing direction. I might be willing to spend extra on aileron and rudder servos, but I think anything more than the 225's on the elevator is kind of overkill. I might be wrong, of course. Another thing is that you were talking about saving an ounce by switching to mini servos right? I'd save an ounce by sticking to the 9001s instead of the 5626s. Why are digitals better?

Dashunde, I meant it doesn't perform particularly well in 3D situations...not that it's structurally weak. It's definitely a solid plane.
I was agreeing with you on both quoted points, and added that it is indeed a well-built plane. (sorry to confuse)

I've got a pretty good amount of stick time on my friends Show50 w/ a Saito 91.
I like the way it flys. Not a bad plane at all, although I dont care much for its KE with the sfg's on... it feels kinda weird as if the upper sfg isnt carrying its fair share of the load and the roll axis moves away from the fuse toward the down-side sfg. Maybe its just his set-up somehow, I dont know.

It is proving to be pretty durable. We have a habit of passing the tx back and fourth and lose track of time, which often results I dry tank deadsticks (stoopid!). After about the 5th deadstick and another incident with a gopher hole, the gear finally pulled out and the wheel pants poked holes in the wing covering.
Easy fix that has been holding strong for quite awhile now.

Its been a good plane.

from what i understand and i may need correcting but digital servos are more accurate at recentering and staying more consistant when running to the set end points. also when setting up like dual elevators when you set the end points it will always go to that exact point every time. when i purchased my 2nd fliton i talked to edson at fliton usa and he recommended the 5245 on the elevators thats one for each halve and the 5625 on the rudder. he also agreed with me that the elevator setup in the manual using one servo and the rod set up was not a good set up. just remember when you have $500-$600 in a plane whats an extra $30 savings if they fail and cause a crash. like i've said i have seen nylon geared servos fail and it wasn't good. alot of people use them but i like to play safe. i already my thumbs to worry about.

Dashunde, I was making sure I explained my point carefully. I've seen several Showtime 50's fly....though I've never flown one. I've begun convincing my parents to let me buy one of the Fliton planes, but who knows how long that's going to last!

Yeah, I wasn't very happy with the split-rod elevator set-up. It sucked, to put it gently .
