Default DL 50 vs Area 51

Guys,
I am in the market for one of these 2 engines to go on a Christmas present my wife bought me (GP Ultimate 1.60). I am just trying to get pros and cons of the engines and don't want to start a big flame war. I am looking for RPM Thrust data and warrentee info so I can make a decision. Thanks for any info you can give me. I probably will be running a Vess prop on the ultimate. I know either one will haul a 14lb ultimate all over creation but I wanted something versitile. I am also looking to add smoke for the plane and wanted a good set up for that so I am thinking a pitts style muffler would work well there.
Thanks for any imput.
Jeff

I have used DL' 50's for several years (since they were introduced) and they are now a very good, reliable, and strong engine with a good reputation.

I am getting an Area 51, 50cc engine on the next shipment, and it will install in place of one of the DL's in the same 85" Yak, so I'll be able to give a good comparison.

So far, the A51 engines seem to be enjoying an exceptional record, and their US distributor, Milton, is providing ACTUAL customer service to his customers. He listens, and takes care of them, without excuses or defense.

Not all distributors of other engines do so well.

I have a brand new Area 51 on a brand new Extreme Flight Extra 300 & out of the box witha Vess 23A prop, it's turning 7020 rpm & it YANKS this 18 lb plane around like it's nothing-& it's only had three 20 oz tanks of gas run through. As for Milton, you can't get anybetter customer service. When I got my motor in, the muffler had a small dent in it's side & I called Milton & I had another one in 2 daysCant' beat that!! I don know much about the DL's, but I now know about the Are 51 & it's AWESOME power right out of the box.

I saw something about Milton and a crash warrentee? Anyone have info on it? I am all about customer service and I have only read good things about Milton's service!

I have to talked to Milton and do sell his engines. This is what he told me about his crash guarantee. If the price of repair is greater the 50% of the new engine, he will sell you a new engine at half price. I hope I got it right. Dennis

THis is exactly the fact; I have been told by a person who USED that warranty (unfortunately), and Milton stood by it. Regardless of the reason, that is one helluva warranty to provide, by anyone. [sm=thumbs_up.gif]

Could be part of the reason I'm getting one, who knows?

I forgot to mention in my reply above, not only did I get a new muffler in 2 days, but Milton enclosed $5.00 for return shipping. I've never had anyone do that!! It speaks VOLUMES!!!!!

The way the 1 year crash warranty works is like this, The cost to repair will not exceed $225.00 for the first year, What I mean by this is if the repair does cost more than $225.00 I have the option to repair and only charge the customer $225.00 or send them a new engine, One way or the other they will only be out $225.00 for repairs for the first year from crash damage, Now this does not cover neglect or misuse of the engine.

I love my Area 51. Same experience as everyone else that has bought one: You have an engine that rips right out of the box. You have a guy that gives great support. That's all I need.

Joe,
Thanks for the information. I have been following the Area 51 thread and watching your numbers there. I haven't heard one complaint yet about the engine.
Thanks again
Jeff

Joe - I have followed your experiences with other engines, and your happiness with this one is obvious! Thanks for posting the info.

You're welcome Bob !! I try to be honest...whether it's good news or bad. I still have to put the engine through its paces but my first impression is very very good.

Also, not to say that DL is a bad engine, I just have no direct experience with it. It's always good to have a few choices.
