I have a giant stinger that is almost ready to fly and my question is should i use metal or plastic bolts for the wing hold down?????

Dont know about the stinger so here is what I suggest.
If the wings have anti-rotation pins then the plastic wing bolts will be fine. If you do not have anti-roatation pins then I would go with the metal bolts.

If the wings have anti-rotation pins then the only use for the wing bolt is to keep the wing secure to the airframe which should never have that much force exerted on it.
If the wings do not have anti-rotataion pins then there will be a lot of force exerted on the wing bolts so metal would be the way to go.

I don't know the stinger, but if its a two piece wing with with the bolts only in shear, nylon should be OK, if however the wing is one piece and the bolts are in tension, IMO I would substitute metal bolts for the wing retention.

A 1/4-20 nylon bolt has a break strength of about 300 lbs.

The wing is one piece foam wing. The wing has dowels in the front to lock it in the fuse, and two 1/4-20 bolts in the rear to hold the wing down.

Okay then I would use metal bolts. I have found that metal bolts with bonded wahsers work really well in this application.
The bottom wing on my Ultimate is a one piece wing that is held on like the Stinger.

1/4-20 Nylon bolts are all you need. They don't back out like steel bolts can.

Very true, but not the thread which can strip if tightened up too much, and will wear with constant use, plus different nylon is used to produce these bolts, I have some that resemble cream cheese from a far east kit.

Either will work. If you elect to go with the nylon make sure you have spares. Nothing like a 50 mile trip to the field and then you overtighten one of your nylon bolts with your preflight adrenalin induced meat fist and she strips real good. Then you discover you don't have any spares[X(] Been there, done that[:@]! My local hardware store carries a very super lightweight aluminum 1/4x20 and with the bonded washers work well. I now carry spares of both now as well as a spare airplane!

All the Stingers I've seen have used 1/4-20 nylon bolts succesfully.
