Wren turboprop advice mw44
Hi everyone
I am considering the purchase of a wren mw44 for install in a 3d aerobatic type aircraft. I am currently considering an aeroworks yak, comp arf 2.2 or similar airframe. I was hoping to get some advice and/or photographs as to how to mount this engine into an airframe. Also, are there limitations as far as performing 3d type maneuvers? Are they even possible? ...hovering, etc. Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi Andy,
I'll answer your email here for everyone's benefit . As you see, the engine is mounted aproximately half way down it's length by a flange with 6 bolts . A very clever configuration compared to the other manufacturers ! Very little clearance is required from the strucure for heat . I was a little worried that my engine was so high in the cowl . Less than 1/2" . First time I started it I taped a thermocouple to the cowl and had a blower handy . The temp only rose 4 deg C ! The green case has ceramic insulation in it and does a very good job of keeping the heat contained and away from the structure .
Regarding the flight envelope , there are no restrictions except to keep the static prop RPM below 9000 . My Meijlik 22-10 turns 6800 rpm . I have well over 2-1 on T/W so the plane accelerates climbing straight up ! You can certainly use that power for hovering if you want . I don't because , frankly , I suck at it ! The engine has quick throttle response past 1/3 power but certainly isn't like a DA 50 for that kind of flying .

Thanks so much for your response. Just out of curiousity, with the comp arf that you have, what is the offset required to get the prop to clear the cowl? It looks like something that is definately manageable...especially on the comp arf airframe. With other aircraft, it appears that I may have to remove the firewall perhaps

hi
i am just starting to build this engine in a comp_arf yak55-2.1m.
you only have to bring a 3mm woodring on the firewall. than it will fit perfect!!!
and by the way you can use the moulding exhaust space for a perfect cooling system.
at last i have no comp-arf kit on the table with that really nice quality.....

My airplane was originally set up with an OS 1.60 ! The firewall was already in place . All I did was cut the circular hole in the original firewall and add another 1/8" ply plate in front to take out the sidethrust . Because of the width of the stacks , even a few degrees made a big difference to the stack outlets . Cosmetically , it wouldn't have been very nice ! I just use the wiggly bit at the back to keep it straight with power changes . Bottom line is that any plane that can take a DA 50 should have the firewall in the right place . Wren demonstrated the Extreme Flight 88" Yak 54 at Jetpower and it looked like a great combo.

I'm currently building a P-51 for the Wren turboprop unit. It will be patterned after the "Stiletto/StilettoII" pylon racer that had clipped wings, removed radiator and costom canopy for reduced drag... should be a real HOOT!

That will be very cool ! A have the TF 1/5 scale ARC here with Sierra gear . Just didn't have the time to build it . The Extra airframe came along so the 44 went into that . I was just flying it yesterday . Lotsa fun ! I'll get around to the P51 eventually and also do it in a fantasy racer scheme .
