Default New (to me) T-Maxx

I just bought a t-maxx from my brother-in-law. Although I am not sure what model. According to the traxxas web site it is a classic. but I have noticed that if it is not a 3.3. then it is a t-maxx classic. Can someone help me identify exactly what model it is?

I dont think the engine was properly broke-in and it is leaking fuel. I think it is coming from where the fule line meets the tank.

So based on the vast knowledge of the forum what engines can I drop in the chassis?

yes that is the tmaxx classic. the same one i started with.

if i were you i would try to start the current engine and tune it. first replace the tank and fuel lines to rule out any air leak related issues you might run into. get fresh fuel also.

if the engine is definitely shot then i would go with the trx 3.3. you can do the Traxxas ERP (engine replacement plan) which will save you money when buying the 3.3

You really cant judge what model of T- Maxx it is by the body. My Original Pro has a 2.5 body and my Custom T- Maxx has the same body that is in the picture, just one that I picked up off the net. Do you have any of pictures of the truck itself? Not web photos? Photos of the front A- Arms, Transmission, Receiver Box, .............

I answered my own question on the engine. It is a 2.5. I also found the fuel leak in the fuel tank. It was cracked right where one of the mouning post meets the bottom of the tank. Would this allow enough air in the system to make it run lean? The two times I have run it the motor has gotten realy hot and it shut off. I reset the needles to factory specs and it is still running hot.

Looks pretty dirty to me, you may just have to keep richening it up until the temps get no higher than 275...ideally you want to be running around 200-225

Well, I would replace the tank and try starting it and seeing if u can re-tune it from there. And yes a leaky fuel tank can cause a lean air leak, which in turn can cause the engine to lean itself out no matter where the needles are set; so I would replace the tank first, then try and re-start and re-tune it and see if that does anything for ya.....good luck with it man!!!!

Yes it is dirty. I only paid $100 for it with RPM front arms installed, RPM rear arms to go with it, field bag and MRC super brain charger.

I will be more than happy to clean it up.

If you cleaned it up real good, you could make some good profit on ebay. Then, you could get a better t-maxx. But, it's not my choice, so do whatever you want to do.

Well, I replaced the fuel tank and it is sill running way hot. It will only run for a couple of min before the engine shuts down. Would it be worth putting a new piston and sleave in it or should I replace the engine all together?

You just answered your own question again. Running hot and only running for a few minutes B4 it shuts off means the piston and sleeve are toast. For the price of a piston and sleeve you might want to look into the Traxxas Engine Replacement Plan. I think you can send Traxxas your old 2.5 for a 3.3 for I think around $100...but don't quote me on the price.

At this point, I would say u are much better off just getting a whole new engine all together; simply because by the time u add up the cost of replacing the piston, sleeve, and rod; u could just end up getting a whole NEW engine if u do the ERP for the stock 2.5 or 3.3; or even better yet, go with one of the O.S. engines that are out there like the OS .18, etc; and u will be much better off and probably much happier that u did so in the long run....just my thoughts here.....

Do the ERP, you'll me much better off with a new motor that YOU can break it. I got a used TMaxx as my first gas RC and was ready to junk it, but gave it one more chance as suggested with doing the ERP. They are so much more fun when they stay running!

Yes they are more fun when they say running. I have an old HPI Nitro RS4 that I have had for about 10 years now. It has the same engine in it that came with the car. I have rebuilt it once and it still runs like a scalded ape.

aaahhhhh[:@] clean the air filter before you even try and starting it and i would put in new tank and fuel lines and personally i would compleatly break down the engine and make sure every thing is spotlessly clean and then put it all back together put in new gaskets and o rings if they are damaged and set all needels back to stock if you want help on any part of tearing down the engine feel free to PM me and i will do my best to help you.

After replaceing the fuel tank, front bulkhead, engine mount and adding a shim it runs great. I even cleaned it up a little. I took engine to my LHS and talked to the guy up there. He cheked out the engine and I told him the story. He had a tore up 2.5 laying around and have me the shim in it. I installed the shim when I got home then we went out to eat (like you all wanted to know). Came home put the engine back in and put half a tank of fuel in it. It ran the half tank with out issue.

I know the engine still needs to be replaced. But it will work for now. I still plan on putting a 3.3 in it but I could not find one at any LHS here in San Antonio.

Well, it sounds like it should be ok for the time being, but obviously like u already said, it should definitely be replaced with the 3.3; more power, more torque, etc. plus u will be much happier....

I dropped in the 3.3 today. I will break it in tomorrow, weather permitting. I also had to take the tranny out because it shifted in to second and stayed there. The adjustment screw had backed all the way out and got lodged in the adjustment access hole. I dis-lodged it and started looking for the sping. After I fished out what was left of it (it was shredded) and replaced it with a spare I had for my Nitro RS4.

BTW, does anyone know what the stock seting is for the 2 speed?
