Default T-Rex 450 SE ESC size????

Hey guys, sorry if this has been covered before but I took a look through the forum a bit and couldn't find anything on it. I'm relatively new to heli's with only a bit of RTF experience, but I've played around with foamies quite a bit and know you can get bit with cheap or marginal stuff so I need a bit of advice on this little beastie...

Got a T-Rex 450SE V2 which came with the battery, ESC, motor etc. I also bought the new JR DS287MG servos for the swash and the JR G770 gyro with the JR 3500G tail servo.

Now I get to looking at the specs for the included ESC and while it's got a nice heat sink and the BEC is a 6 volt output which the little Spektrum 6100E will like, it's only rated for 3 servos when running a 3 cell Li-Po battery and max 2 amps.

The included ESC is the Align RCE-BL35X and the motor is the Align RCM-BL430XL brushless. It's a 3700 KV and max 350 watts.

Sounds to me like the ESC is not up to the task at hand, or at least will be pushing things?

Do I just avoid the pain and change it out now or is it going to work okay?

Thanks in advance!

You won't have any problems with the RCE-BL35X ESC.
Mine does not even get warm running 3 HS65mg's , 401 gyro and 9650 tail servo on 3s lipos.
Granted I don't fly 3D or even very aggresively but I am happy with it.

The DS-287MG's are digital, right? If so, you may want to consider an external BEC as insurance. The digital servos draw more current than thier analog counterparts. I guess you could try it without, but have some way (IR Heat measurement 'gun') of checking teh temp on your ESC.

Yeah the little 287's are digital and faster than the 285's that folks I've seen have been suggesting for this size heli.

I've got an IR thermometer I use to keep an eye on the cylinder head temps of my gassers so I could check it with that, but I'm wondering if guys have experience using the Align ESC with digital servos as they do pull more power than analogs. So a rating of 3 servos with 3 cell Li-Po's seems too small and while I'm not really up to speed on the current demand calculations for the motors, a 350W motor running on a 35 amp ESC with what appears to be an undersized BEC seems a bit much as well. IIRC and I'd have to go double check, that ESC has an 80 degrees C temp rating/shutdown? What kind of temps are we looking at? Seems like it should not get so hot you can't touch the thing and that is well below 80 degree C temp.

As for an external BEC, yeah one could do that but it seems a bit overkill for a model this size. I think if the provided ESC isn't up to the task or cause for worry about a power brownout with the Spektrum radio, I'd rather just get a bigger ESC?????

on my SE V2, im running a AR6200 rx with DS-285's and JR G7703D gyro with Hi-tec HS-81MG on the tail and i have not had any power problems even with some light 3D. i dont know if the 287's draw more than the 285's, but off hand, i'd say you should be okay.

Wow, I'm trying to get all of this...! I just got a T-rex 450 and I am pretty new at this but i learn fast so I want to make this T-Rex great!!! I think I want that CrAzY Scorpion motor (the HK2221-6), I have some Align High-Power 20C 11.1V 2100mAh batteries, I think I should go for the GY401 gyro......
My question is will the RCE-BL35X ESC Be good for me? And what is a good servo set up? I am starting on a MX450 xs, that is were i'm getting most of this... On that one I have the Align 430XL motor, the servos are HS-65HB from hytec, the tail is a futaba s9650 Digital, the bec (?) is a RCE-BL35X and to be honest my friend helped me set it up then moved and I have no idea if this is an O.K. set-up or a good one?
Should I do the same on the T-Rex? Can I use the Scorpion with the other stuff or do I need a different Speed controller? I would really appreciate any help anyone could give me?

The Scorpion 2221-6 is a super charged motor and you will need to use a 10t-11t pinion to get any flight time out of it. A 20c battery will not do it . You will need 25C-30C batteries. That motor pull twice the amperage than the 3700 430XL. A 40-60 amp ESC would be in order. If you are not into blistering 3D flying you will not like it. You only get 3-4min flights from the motor. You will need some good carbon blades. The MX set up is just fine and top notch. You have it right with that. The motor that makes more sense would be the 2221-8 super power on a 12T -13T pinion. No Bogging and it will not destroy your batteries and yes the 35X ESC will work fine. But man, what a power house the 2221-6 is!!!!

Keep the Align ESC. and get the Scorpion -8 and some Outrage 25 or 30c 2200mah packs and You're set.

Stay away from Align battery packs, they are crap.
