Default Should I do this or not?

I got my first Nitro RC for xmas. It was a Redcat Lightning car. I made many many mistakes with it. It runs like a gimp right now. I learned a lot with that car and have since bought a MGT 3.0. I have done everything I know to do correct with the MGT. It runs great and I really love it. So here is my question, it's a two part question.

I am thinking of completely taking the Redcat apart, every bolt and screw out hoping to learn what makes it tick. I plan on putting it back together too.... duh. On a scale of 1-10, 1 being that it will be a piece of cake, how hard will this be to actually get it back together? And do you think it is worth the effort and will it teach me anything?

Yeah, what redfisher1974 said is right.

Be methodical, keep a clean work area, and you'll learn tons. The best way to learn things in this hobby is by actually doing it.

When I take thigns apart, I take them apart 1 by one. Like take the front end off first, dissemble it, clean and oil all bearings (since it is a redcat will probably be bushings, get bushing oil) then assemble knowing where ALL the screws are and should be. Then put the front end back on or you can wait till the end. Do the same with the rear, and then clean the chassis.

ChrisRC, so you bring up another question. What would be the best order in taking it apart? Or should I just take about one thning and clean it and put it back before starting on the next? I'm gonna start tomorrow after work. I'll keep posting how it is going.

I like to take off the front then clean, then rear and clean making sure you know exactly where all the screws are, then clean the chassis and put everyhting back together. I take the enigne and radio tray out first.

Also make sure you have the manual by you when you first take it apart. it should have step by step on how to take things apart if it is good quality.....Wait...I kinda doubt it will have that.

Agreed, I say go for it! Hands on is the best learning, gives you a better understanding of how stuff "ticks". Take your time, use a manual, keep everything organized, and take pics each step of the way if you find that to be a helpful reference.

yea take it apart its not hard as long as you keep every thing nice and oraninized.

here is a tip (if you haven't done this already) get an old white towel and put it over your work area. that way you will keep the table your working on clean and it will prevent screws from rolling off the table.

I don't really see what the big deal is all about. These things are not really rocket science, if you're a reasonably intellegent person it won't be that much of a challange to take apart and put back togeather. I mean really, there are 10 & 12 yera olds on here all day long that do it.
You're at least as smart as a 5th grader, right????

In short, follow Nike's advice

Just do it!!

OK, so I took apart a few things. I'm not messing with the suspension b/c nothing is wrong with it. I took the 2 speed transmission out. And dang it just came right out.. Easily. Well, I look down in it and I see the two large cogs, they are all fine except for a the little piece that sticks off of the one closest to that thing that has a small piece that looks like it opens at a certain speed and grabs the "broken part" to make it shift to second gear. What is that part called that has that small piece that comes out and grabs the other piece? Sorry for the vagueness, I don't know what it's called. Is it called the "slipper"?
