Spark Plug Numbers and Heat Settings
OK,this is information taken from one of my Chiltons Repair manuals.
The heat range is depicted by a number on the plug. The number is in bold.
AC-/R45TS
Bosch[old]-/WA 145 T30
Bosch[new]-/HR 8 Y
champion-/RDJ 7 Y
Fram/Autolite-/415
Mopar-/P 62 PR
motorcraft-/BRF 42
ngk-/BP 5ES-15
prestolite-/14GR 5 2A
nippendenso-/W 16 EP
On AC,Bosch[new],champion,fram/autolite,mopar,motorcraft,and prestolite.A higher number indicates a hotter plug.
On bosch[old],ngk, and nippendenso,a higher number means a colder plug.
Also,a plug that has the insulator and electrode farther down in the body is hotter from what i read.
And also, any of you guys flying those 2 ton bricks with the Mopar, and Motorcraft plugs, make sure there the right ones and your engine is tuned for top performance so we dont hear of any unfortunate mishaps.
Just for info.
Heat range refers to the spark plugs ability to conduct heat away from the firing end.It must conduct the heat away in an even pattern to avoid becoming a source of pre-ignition yet it must also operate hot enough to burn off conductive deposits that could cause misfiring.
