a great weather resource

a great weather resource
I have found the Weather Underground to be a great resource. The following examples show why.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/CA/Imperial_Beach.html
The first link is a weather map for information near my club field. When one scrolls down, there are a bunch of small local weather stations nearby. Clicking on one of them (I tried NERRS NERRS METEOROLOGICAL SITE AT TIJUA, Imperial Beach, CA) and this takes me to that site, which has a wonderful little map which is updated occasionally and shows all kinds of great weather information very near my club field.

The great thing about this is that, for a guy who flys WW-I biplanes, wind direction and velocity is immediately available. I can tell what the conditions are likely to be, before I hop in the car.

This is the weather station right at the Sun Valley Flyers Field in Arizona where I also fly. The club has its own station and it is a great resource when trying to decide which planes to load up in the morning.

That is a nice resource.
I've looked at many of the weather sites out there, but I still haven't found one that does a better job of planning my flying days that UsAirNet.
[link]http://usairnet.com/cgi-bin/launch/code.cgi?sta=KLAW&model=avn&state=OK&Submit=Get+Fo recast[/link] . Of course change the location to your local area.
They are usually pretty close to accurate on the wind forecasts.

Very nice thread! It must be tough to make money in the weather website business.
I've found this to be very helpful. Here in the south its generally enough to know if the green blobs are coming our way. (Green is bad.) Be sure and click on the map at your location... Then click "Show Animation".

Hi Ken,
I have been using the same resource until recently. What happened to these guys? They seem to have disappeared. Any news?

I still use them every day. I haven't had any problems accessing them.

Here's what we use at our local field. [link=http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/wxpage.cgi?call=svflir&last=24&radar=***]sun valley fliers weather station[/link] I understand the total cost was around $1000 complete. Not sure how the internet link was arranged.

RE: a great weather resource
another good resource is aviation forecasts. The airport is about 8 miles from the flying field, so the metars and tafs are pretty accurate for wind and weather

Like RCKen, I like Usair.net, http://www.usairnet.com/cgi-bin/laun...t=Get+Forecast . The three day wind forcast is nice to see how the flying conditions will be.

Usairnet is pretty good but I have found that I like NOAA point forecasts better. They have hourly weather graphs available also from an index towards the bottom of the point forecast page. They are generally not quite as optimistic as USAirnet.
http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick...1&unit=0&lg=en
http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick...Type=graphical
And the NOAA Aviation Weather Center...
http://aviationweather.gov/
For instance: Tuesday May 5th 2009...USAirnet says 14mph at 240° and 70°F. Noaa says 17mph with gusts to 26mph and a temp of 68°F.
