Default DL50 - rightside up? or upside down?

I've been told I should run my DL50 upside down, ie cylinder low. Is there any reason that it can't be right side up? With glow there is good reason to keep the engine upright - flooding the plug - but what about the DL50? And, (out of curiosity), is there a general "upside down or right side up" rule for gas engines?

Thanks in advance,

Martin

It can be either way. Mine have all been jug down. No flooding ever. Starts and runs great. Welcome to the forum.

They don't care what position they are in, spark plug up, down, either side or in between, they'll run the same.

Yup, when mounted inverted, you might just store em with the piston ring above the exhaust and transfer ports to help prevent excess oil from making a bed on your plug as it rests in your shop.

Thanks guys, that means I can look at a whole lot of WWI stationary engine possibilities.

With the walbro type carbs, there should be no difference in running in any position. However, since fuel mist is heavier than air, there might be some differences in throttle response after a while at a fixed throttle setting.
I prefer the sidewinder setup, not because of engine response, but because it is impossible to puddle fuel in the spark plug. Any excess fuel will be expelled right out into the muffler. This of course only applies to storing and starting the engine. Once running this is a non-issue.

Ditto on all this. It will be fine no matter how it is positioned. These are fine engines.

You can run them either way, but be aware that most of the mufflers are made for an inverted mount. I mounted my Quadra 40 upright(didn't have a choice on that plane) and it blew black oil all down the top wing and fuselage of the biplane. You may have to do some creative work with the header.
