Thinking about getting back in-What have I missed?
So, it's been a couple years since I had anything RC related. I had an RC10GT back in the day (lol) and it was alright, just too fragile for my tastes.
What I'm looking for is something that can handle road, off road, cliffs, jumps, and all that... without breaking constantly.
So, what's new and hot?

1/8 buggies and truggies are good. MT's are good but can be money pits. The new short course truck like the Losi Strike, Traxxas Slash and HPI Blitz seem to be popular now.

you want to jump off cliffs and othr crazy stuff then the hpi savage is prolly your best bet.
if you buy a traxxas you'll end up replacing alot of parts th savage is better suited for insane stunts.
just my .02

You've missed the large scale explosion. Don't dismiss 1/5th gassers, we have more choice now than ever before. 2wd, 4wd, off road, on road.

You missed the transition from kit car dominance to RTRs for the lazy and stupid majority this hobby now attracts. The technology has gotten better while people have gotten worse.
