engine stalling. help
i have a savage xl and i cant keep the engine running. i had what i thought was a good tune and it ran great for maybe ten tanks. now it will start, idle like normal and accelerate to about half throttle when it dies. i tried puting the tune back to break-in settings to no avail. does anybody have any ideas? could this be a fuel problem?

RE: engine stalling. help
A couple of things:
- have you sealed the engine?
- does the pistol sleeve have any deformities?
Since you're experiencing the flame-out at 1/2 throttle, you should focus on the HSN. If it bogs down before it stalls then your HSN is possibly too rich. On the other hand, if it stalls out of the blue (no warning) then you may have your HSN set too lean. Make adjustments to the HSN in 1/4 turns; clockwise leans out the fuel mixture, and counter-clockwise richens it.
Make sure the engine is warmed up before you assume that your adjustment didn't work. If you've checked/tried everything I've mentioned, then just standby and wait for some of the more experienced guys on this forum to lend their opinions

RE: engine stalling. help
sorry about that last post. apparently i cant post from my phone.what i was trying to say is that i played with the hsn and the lsn and nothing changed it still cuts out which leads me to believe that its a fuel delivery problem. would a leak in the fuel system cause that?

RE: engine stalling. help
Check your needle postions. Especially the mid-needle. Make sure the mid-needle isn't spinning when you rev the engine. I had a similar prob with my X SS.

RE: engine stalling. help
Aww, what the heck.
Once you get it running pinch the fuel line off near the carb.
if it dies in about 3 seconds your carb shouyld be close.
If it runs for 5+ seconds start leaning the LSN (the screw in the moving part of the carb.)
You want about 3-4 seconds then revving and dies.
That's a starting point.
I'm just some retard so don't mind me.
To get it tuned, First get the engine fully warmed up!
Never tune a cold engine.
Start from factory settings on all needles. (Maybe 1/8 to 1/4 in on the HSN from factory.)
Be sure to set the idle gap as well as needles to factory settings before retuning from scratch.
Get your HSN set first.
Keep leaning the HSN 1/8 turn in at a time and watch the performance increase.
Making a couple top speed passes each time to let the engine get used to the new setting.
When you see a decrease in performance turn the HSN back out 1/8 to 1/4 turn to richen it back into the safe zone. Keep an eye on temps as well.
Good top speed and good trail of smoke at all speeds is what you want.
Then set the LSN.
You can do the pinch or punch test, or both.
PUNCH TEST-
Once you have the HSN set, engine warmed up.
Make a couple top speed passes and bring it in and let idle for 10- 15 seconds.
Then give it 3/4 to full throttle.
If is slow to take off and smokes alot you are too rich and need to start leaning the LSN.
If it takes off fast, rev's and dies, etc... it is too lean and you need to richen the LSN.
If it smokes and is slow taking off, start turning the LSN in 1/12 to 1/8 turn and again make a few passes to get it used to the new setting in between adjustments.
PINCH TEST-
Make a couple top speed passes, bring it in and pinch off the fuel line near the carb.
Start counting 1...2...3...
It should run for about 3 seconds before it revs and dies.
If it runs longer you need to lean the LSN.
If less than 3 seconds you need to richen the LSN.
Once you have good acceleration and still have smoke at all speeds you are done.
You may need to reset the idle on the carb once you are done tuning.
Weather always plays into your tuning and you will need to adjust the HSN for day to day conditions.
I.E.- colder weather requires more rich settings and vice versa.
I am just a basher and no expert so use this info at your own risk!

RE: engine stalling. help
thanks for the url for the sealing how to. Here is an update: i initially thought that it was a fuel delivery problem because i found a crack in the fuel tank. after replacing the tank i still have the same problem. i have adjusted the tune more ways than i can count but i still get the same result. half throttle and then it dies. im not sure im describing this problem very well so i posted a vid on you tube to see if maybe that will show you better and i can describe. thanks for all the help so far. im going to try sealing the engine next. let me know if you have any other ideas besides scrapping it and getting the lrp. which i really want to do. lol.

RE: engine stalling. help
It doesent seem like an air leak problem...
Kinda weird.
What does it do when you try driving it?
I would start leaning the HSN 1/4 turn and keep trying that and see what happens.
EDIT- Sorry got distracted... if it gets worse from leaning it then just go richer and see what happens.
Did you try a new glow plug?

RE: engine stalling. help
so heres another update: i found the problem. this crappy 5.9 came from the factory with defects i guess. initially i took the head off the engine to check the sleeve. this time i took it completely apart. i found that the piston is missing a substantiual chunk and the pin for the connecting rod had also been broken. i have put a gallon of 20% nitro through this engine. im pretty disappointed in the durability of this engine. i maybe had run it for 2-3 hours and the piston broke. now i have to wait two weeks for hpi to fix it under warranty. why cant the just send me the money for the sleeve and piston and ill do it my self. but that 110 bones aint comin outta my paycheck. does anyone else think this engine sucks? anyway heres a pick of what i found and thanks again for all your help.

RE: engine stalling. help
Slayer,
I am new to this site. Just got a Savage X and your "tutorial" is great. Did a few things and you are right on. Thanks for the contribution. My issue is idleing. Just very finicky to tune in. Any tips for getting that perfect idle? Thanks

And then, what you can do, is if/when they send you a new 5.9
Throw that beyotch on ebay
and get something that doesn't suck

RE: engine stalling. help
Sell the 5.9 it's worth about $120 on ebay!
LRP .28 $149 at tower or LRP .30 great engines very simple associated/LRP really did well on this one.
If it's power you want get a hold of supertib a member here. Just talk engines and not vehicle specifics he does have his opinions and they are based on facts. You wont win an argument about this vs that! I had a problematic picco p3 .28 turned out to be my inexperience not the engine. I now own 3 Picco .28's & 1 .26 He's a rep for a few engine manufactures Go engines, Picco, Jammin, and maybe even a few others. He has experience with every engine out there. PM him before you buy just pick his brain
