RE: just stripped another idler gear.
You must have a bad bearing or a bearing spun in the case and now one of the shafts is out of alignment some thing along those lines [sm=shades_smile.gif]

RE: just stripped another idler gear.
when you pull the cover off the transmission. and your left with the 3 speed gears sitting on top. (as seen in first photo)
should there be play amongst those gears?
they all seem a lil loose. the cir clip is still intact. am just wondering if there is too much movement in the gears.
which i guess could be grabbing on the idle gear, which in return chews it off??

RE: just stripped another idler gear.
k5.9 all original xl. running gear anyhow.
there is about 2-3mm to each side on the largest gear. (sorry dont know the name. aint got my manual on me)
could having the idle set to high be doing this. as i do adjust this back and forth on each start up.
bearings seem fine....
cheers for your help.

RE: just stripped another idler gear.
well i installed another idle gear today. whilst i had it apart i adjusted the 1st to 2nd gear change and came across this bearing.
could well may have been my problem. seems to have tightened up the gears a bit (not so much play left to right).
see how we go though i guess.
thanks again for your help guys. appreciated.

I had a similar problem on mine, there was little bits of broken stuff rattling around in the box which kept breaking teeth on the gears

RE: just stripped another idler gear.
Hey Gradee, did you ever find the solution to this problem? I'm a savage owner as well, I run a picco on the 3 speed. I love the 3 speed, but the number of people running into this same issue is alarming.
I've been scouring the pages online, and I've come to find that this is the inherent weakness of these 3 speed trannies. Many people Ive read about are running into this same issue, even highly experienced modelers I read about on the forums, modelers such as Budbud, continue to destroy these gears, and just about everyone who tries to run a 6s brushless setup on their 3 speed destroys the same darn idler and drive gear! I'm on a pursuit to see if hpi will make machined gears, or some other company or person would be willing to make some idler and drive gear out of higher quality metal (machined, highs speed steel). The bottom line here is that the quality of these gears is not up to the task, these gears are cast, not machined. I hope HPI or a company such as Robinson Racing would produce a revised version of these gears.

RE: just stripped another idler gear.
Under hi stress could the centrefugal force cause the case to flex? I don't see but three screws holding down the top of the case! Under load if the top of the case flexes I could see the gear becomming miss-alinged causing the theeth to skip and bearing strees! But you would see the wear on the theeth? Just thought I would chime in and give an outsiders thought!

RE: just stripped another idler gear.
hi there mate, no i havent found the problem or the solution.
im waiting on new idle gears and spur gears. plus i ordered a new trans shaft and a few other bits and pieces.
but at the same time as ordering that i did just purchase a whole new 3 speed trans.
kinda figured something was out of whack. dont know what though...
il be very disapointed if it happens again straight away with the new trans.
to be honest i really have no idea why this is happening....
machined billut gears would be a great help. these cast ones really arent cutting the mustard so to speak.
do let me know if you find someone to do them.
kinda difficult being in australia with HPI.
with the amount of money ive spent on parts for the 3 speed, i could have just bought a whole new one.
ah well, all a big learning curve i guess.
good luck with it mate.
i know i need it. hehe.

RE: just stripped another idler gear.
Stupid question
Are the top screw holes to the case stripped out?
Back when the X first came out, that was a common occurrence. People would take the top off the case, then over-tighten and strip out the holes.
Just a thought

RE: just stripped another idler gear.
Gradee, I sure do hope things get better for you and that the next 3 speed works out flawlessly. One thing that did come to mind, one that I am experimenting with to solve the exploding gear problem (and one that seems to be working so far) is shimming the final drive gear. The final drive gear is an awkward looking gear, the gear is offset to the left of its central rotating axis (does that make sense?), and so when a certain amount of torque and speed are applied, naturally, the gear wants to tilt from its axis, which in turn creates friction in the mesh with the idler gear below it, and you then have stripped gears. Ive put in a 6mm shim (0.2 wide) between the drive gear and the "c" clip that holds it, and this has removed a significant amount of play, reducing slop and gear destroying play. ive also shimmed the rest of the tranny so all the gears alight properly and to remove play. my truck is running and shifting flawlessly though the gears, and that is something else considering the fact that i am running big heavy tires (masher 40s) with a picco .28 on stock 17/47 gearing.
I'll be sure to let you know of anything i find re: new/ better solutions gradee. Dont give up!

RE: just stripped another idler gear.
I have close to 2 gallons on my XL and have yet to have an issue with the transmission. Only issue I had at first was when I disassembled it to look at examine everything, there was an excessive amount of lock-tite on one of the clutches and I broke one of those little flanged bearings trying to take it apart! I had HPI warranty it though. I have a LRP30 in mine with 16/47 gearing at the time, so that is considerably higher than stock, and I haven't had anything happen to the transmission.
For Halloween I have the Jumbo Kong wheels on it with 14/52 gearing, so I'll see how the transmission holds up to that.
