The Hybrid Hybrid
Hey Mike,
I thought I would share with the OMP fans out there my version of your 92" Hybrid. I have the build thread on our clubs site at [link=http://www.qcrcc.com/qcrcc/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1208]QCRCC[/link] for those that are interested in seeing it as it went together. I maidened the plane on the 14th but I misread the instructions on the CG. I was balanced one inch too far back and needless to say it was flaring on its own when I landed. I have the CG on the marks now and I’ve put about forty more minutes on it over the weekend. At fifteen pounds it lands like a butterfly with sore feet. I was very happy with the knife edge coupling. There was a slight pull to the canopy but very easy to manage. Even on the back side of a knife edge loop where the coupling is at its worst I didn't have a problem finding the balance. My goal as I built the Hybrid was to keep it as light as I could without compromising strength in the airframe. So far it has survived all I have thrown at it and it has held together. The finished weight is 15lbs even. I can get 5 more ounces out of it by removing the wheel pants but there isn't a need.
It is equipped with,
Engine, DA 50 with pitts muffler
Radio, Futaba 608 Fasst receiver
Servos, DS8611s on the ailerons and elevators, DS8711 on the rudder, 9402 on the throttle
Receiver battery is a 2300mAh Duralite Plus A123
Ignition battery is a 1350mAh Thunder Power Li-Po
Receiver power switch is a Fromeco Kodiak
Ignition switch is a Duralite Digi switch
Covering is Monokote

RE: The Hybrid Hybrid
The hybrid looks great. Really nice covering. I may get one of these kits when/if they come back in.
I have to say one thing though, Get rid of the paint stick prop. Go with a Vess or xoar. There is a difference.

I'm talking to my laser cutter now about doing a few kits. Normal kit run will be this fall though just in time for winter building.

RE: The Hybrid Hybrid
AirTramp,
I have a few questions. I'm fairly sure (know) santa is going to leave a hybrid kit under the tree this year. Don't you love it when the wife asks what you want for Christmas? Anyway,
1 how much did you add to the width of the fuse overall? I read your build and I'm guessing an inch.
2 were you still able to use a 1 1/4 x 36" CF wing tube or did you use something longer?
I'm going to use a MT-57 with a header and can, 24-8 JC super prop

RE: The Hybrid Hybrid
Hi Edgewize,
I don't recall what the original bulkhead sizes were but this is what I came up with. The firewall on the Hybrid Hybrid is 6" wide. The fuse width at the rudder hinge line is 1.5". The taper along the entire fuselage changed from the original and all the bulkheads were replaced because of the width change. Also the angel of the wing root had to be adjusted to match the new taper angle of the fuse.
Here is a picture of the aluminum wing tube and the carbon fiber replacement. The CF tube was long enough that I was able to cut it to size. I think the fuse at the wing tube socket is 1.5" wider than the stock width so a 36" replacement tube is plenty long enough for the extra width.
For me the mods were fun to incorporate and I now have a unique airplane. But I have flown several other hybrids and they all fly just like mine. So unless you really have big hands or you are looking for that something different to set your plane apart from others I wouldn't go through the hassle of widening the stock Hybrid. Mike has a really good design with the Hybrid and luckily the changes to widen the fuse didn't interfere with his work.

RE: The Hybrid Hybrid
AirTramp,
Thanks for the info. I measured the firewall and tail width from the plan and you added 17/32" to each side overall. I like the idea of a wider body plus I read someone had a problem with a failure in flight at the horizontal stab and recommended reinforcing this area. I think an inch wider cross section there would help alot to support the tail. Rather than fabricate new F cross members I'm planning to partial cut the originals down their centers then assemble per plan. If I complete the center cuts, widen it by an inch or so front and rear then square everything up using aluminum angle irons and carpenter squares, I should be able to splice all the F sections back again with fill and bracing strips of light ply.
I'm also going to use two servos per winghalf, split the ailerons at R5 and program quad flapps. I have another plane set up with this and its great fun using crow/spoilers. It's also great for landing in high wind. Hit your crow switch, verticle dive pull out just before hitting the ground, keep some power on and Bobs your Uncle.
