I'll agree heartily with all, excepting the part about it being rude to reply privately. Still trying to figure that one out.
Here's a good example of how a private reply can help, and maintain forum decor at the same time:
Last week, a newbie posted in the heli forum asking a question. He was given "advice" by another obvious (and admitted) newbie, who, if I was reading his later posts correctly, isn't even flying yet!!! And his advice, BTW, was dead wrong.
Now, I (or somebody else) could have "called out" the newbie holding forth like an expert. All that would have accomplished would be to embarass him and possibly start a flamefest. Meantime the guy who needed help would be left wondering about this bunch of morons he had stumbled upon.
I sent the guy a PM, answering his question and giving him some additional advice. So did several other guys who have been flying helicopters for a while, I later found out. The newcomer to RCU got his information, nobody had their feelings hurt, and the board remained tranquil.
Now, please explain to me what is rude about that.
FWIW, the above scenario occurs infrequently on another, dedicated heli board. The person giving bad advice is pounced upon and well and truly toasted. Sure, it helps lurkers, and can be quite entertaining, but that sort of activity is not tolerated here. It HAS occurred here, but we won't go there...<G>
