we are working to get the price very attractable, the prices for all the Torch Engines will be out very very soon. The 40 on a 25% Yak will be a blast, out of the box the 40 was turning a 20x6 7900rpm,this is a brand New engine,2oz of fuel and no needle adjustments, once you break it in it only gets better. Torch also test ran the new 50cc,and the bench mark prop for that engine was a 24x8 [X(].
Do you ever make you're way to Central Fl. ?

Back to the Extra -

Been working on mine the past couple days and am currently building up the motor mount for the DA85. The bottom of the plane needed to be opened up a bit to get the KS1090 pipe inserted. It's just too fat to squeeze through between the gear plate and formers in the fuse.

Minor flaws but overall the plane is built well. I needed to drill out the existing wing anti-rotation pins and install new ones. The CF ones that were there were pointed down at a 15deg angle and would not align with the fuse - minor, but easily fixed... Really the only gripe.. The hardware for it is great - looks like the same stuff that comes with a PAU Edge my buddy has, although I opted for the H9 Titanium links.. I'm going with A123's this time and picked up the Fromeco Kodiak switches - pretty cool setup and the fast charge time was sweet. I was charging a Li-Ion last night and a A123 - I had two of the A123's charged before the Li-Ion was even finished... Very Sweet!! (Mainly because I end up forgetting to charge and end up doing it first thing at the field...)

If anyone is going with a canister or pipe on the DA85 - you'll need a 50mm drop header - lines up perfect... Will post some pics when I get some time...

Got to work on the DA85 motor mount. I had to get the motor 1-5/8" off the firewall and DA recommended supporting the entire frame of the motor vs. just the tabs with standoffs (like a 100 or 50). I used 1/4" and 1/8" Aircraft Ply and laminated it up into a block. Drilled/sanded out the center for the carb and ligtened it with holes on the sides.

The mount weighs 4.2 oz. so I could shave some more wood and lighten it up some. You can see in the pic how much extra is available on the edges of the motor mount. Maybe some trimming later... My buddy built one of aluminum (he's a tool maker and has the equipment) and his is just a little heavier but much more "cool factor". Getting closer, next is mounts for the pipe...

Jeff,
From the manual that came with the DA-85:

"- If the firewall/motor box is too far back, it can be extended by adding a layer, or layers, of aircraft plywood, or extending the motor box wiht aircraft plywood.
- We do not recommend using standoffs or spacers to mount the DA85. Vibration and stress to the engine case increase when standoffs are used. Damage from using standoffs or spacers will not be covered under warranty.
- If you still elect to use shims or spacers between the rear of the engine and the firewall, make sure that the mounting faces of all the spacers are flush wiht the rear of the engine. If the face of the spacers are not in the same plane or perfectly flush with the rear mounting face of the motor, the crankcase may be damaged. Again, this will not be covered under warranty."

I'm no structural engineer, so I figured I'd build up a mount and lighten it so I'd not go against any warranty or risk the motor failing in flight and shredding the plane in the process. Made some more headway today and got the DA mounted and the cowl cutout. You do see part of the head hanging down and I'll grab a pic of it - nice thing of twins where that's not an issue and it's really clean looking.

Here's a couple more pics...

Henna

Brock really liked flying my 260, just need to figure out the throttle issue. Yours looks good. Why the problem with the anti rotational pins?

Not sure on the pins - looks like they were installed with epoxy and the pin drooped and created a misalignment before curing. No way they test fit it afterwards - it would have been impossible to get in. The horizontal stabs were perfect, wings must have been put together on a Monday or Friday

Started dicing up the underside and setting up the pipe. I'm looking at the pipe and that thing is huge!! I'll have to move the rudder servo higher by building a tray about an inch higher for clearance. Perhaps some heat shielding by the wing tube - not sure how hot the exhaust will get and if it will cause probs with the CF wingtube..

Anyway - here's more pics...

Jason,
Are you going to close up the canister with a hatch?
A tunnel liner would help funnel airflow and isolate some of the components.
Looks good as usual.

I sure am - I need to wrap up the canister mounts first and leave enough room so I can adjust it for tuning then use some very thin balsa sheeting to build up the tunnel and block out the fuse. In the CompArfs I've seen folks just run the tuned pipes without a tunnel built but I think the tunnel will force air along keeping things cool... Will probably leave an area open towards the rear for venting and just recover the rest.

The KS1090 is like a baseball bat, so imagine wedging that thing in there. It appears that the AMT pipe is thinner (like a Greeves to some extent) so less fitment issues. I'm not sure how you could wedge a KS-95 in there for folks with a Can - it's just tight between the gearplate and the upper deck plate in the fuse but I'm sure it's possible.

For those following...

More progress on the tuned pipe tunnel and support. Used some ply and routed silicon tubing through it as a support for the can - works great and very snug. I also used some covering in the tunnel to seal it off and build up a light frame from balsa. Works great and should be fine around the heat (I'm hoping). I've got plenty of airflow and the vent is large so no worries there.

I grabbed some automotive heat wrap for headers and wrapped the part of the pipe that runs above the gear. I didn't want any heat issues there and problems with delamination. Time to hit the electronics and get it installed in the fuse - main project is over and I'm happy with the outcome.

Nice looking! You will do good with that cooling. That pipe will get hot, mine does.

I have been having problems with the strength of the gear box on mine. This Sunday I had three perfect landings and the third shows a wrinkle above the gear on the fuse side. My buddy thinks it is flight loads transforming into the area just before the leading edge of the wing along the fuse side.

Anybody do any strengthing in this area with success wanna share your techniqe? I know the manufacturer rep commented in another thread to beef up with tri stock but never got a picture or much detail on it.

That is the price I paid. Mine came via Bax Global and cost $120 to deliver. The hardware is good and usable and the Carbon Fiber wing and tail tube (and tail wheel) are great added bonuses.

Mine flys very light and it can also fly like on rails too.

I did a build thread last year and you can read through it for the nitty gritty on the airfram and the prospect of using a single cylinder engine to fly it.

Jeffr0503-
They have a shipping calculator there on thier website so you can get the price to ship to OR. The price on the website is correct - just give them a call and they can help you out...

Little update here - plane is together and I'm now setting it up for CG and it's really nose heavy. I had to move my A123 packs (2300 mah x2) to the rear of the fuse (inside near the rudder) to balance out. I have an alum spinner from AirWild with a lightened backplate and may have to go CF. With the packs back there I don't need to add any lead, but I will be replacing the stock LG with a CF version and see what kind of weight I can remove in front of the CG. I can understand totally why the guys with the twins are nose heavy... The stock LG is pretty heavy and I have some Graphtec CF gear for the AeroWorks 10cc Extra so I'll check and see the weight difference. The GraphTec version is about 1" shorter (fuse to wheels) than the stock version but still looks good.

Ordered my graphics from BadBrad and they should be here next week - more pics to come later this week.

I'm on track for the maiden this weekend and will try get some photos / video and #'s on the DA-85 with the Pipe.

I am surprised that you are nose heavy with a DA-85. I am balanced with a DA-100 with my batteries inside the fuse towards to back of the hatch...

The pipe should have given you even more weight behind the CG...

I am very curious on how the carbon fiber landing gear works out for you. What is the weight difference and how is fit, form and function...

I'm with you on it - had wifey help me last night and marked it for CG and started moving stuff around. I'm wondering if the mount for the DA is part of the prob? I'll post interior pics tonight... I have the two servos (throttle and choke) up front along with the ignition. One Fromeco reg just behind front edge of hatch and the ignition battery right on the wing tube. I have a 8711 in pull-pull as I didn't expect to be so nose heavy. The rcvr is just in front of the 8711 for rudder and I figured the batts would be on the rear tray somewhere. The pipe was pretty light and I'm a bit confused as well.

The stock landing gear are HEAVY... I weighed the wheels and they were around 4.5 oz. for the pair which was pretty light. I'm guessing that the CF landing gear will be the ticket. I'll get pics side by side and installed if I can wrap it up tonight. Weights will be included too as the stock gear looks way more beefier than the GraphTec.

You could remove the pull-pull and go with two servos in the tail, remove the choke servo and go with a manual solution and start moving stuff backwards...

My Extra 260 is setup with a 3W-106, everything is back as far as it can go, including the fuel tank is aft of the wingtube. If I were you I would mount the JR 8711 in the tail as a push-pull, it is an easier setup and this airplane needs weight to the aft.
