I'm right at 3.5, I think... whichever was the recommended in the manual, (don't have it with me), thats where I'm at. I could probably adjust a bit, its a wee nose-heavy at that location, but you'd never know it by the way it flies!

Wow.. thats about or at the extreme rearward point if recollect. Manuals' at home and I'm at work, can't find a copy on the 'net. My personal experience, the manual recommended CG worked well for me. For someone VERY comfortable with 3D, it might be just fine rearward. I opt for nose-heavy to start, and work back as necessary. Earlier this month maidened my 55" 300 SHP (3D Hobby Shop).. best I could get the CG was just inside the backside limit. Roll inverted and the nose would shoot straight up. Landings are interesting.. as I have about zero experience w/tail-heavy birds. Got on ground okay w/no damage, but would not have wanted to found myself in that situation with my Dietrich, that would be rough for even good pilots. (The 55' took an additional 3oz in nose to balance neutral, so swapping out to 3oz heavier motor, problem solved! )
Try to get it closer to the manufact. recommended location. Mine was off balance at first, just had to move a Fromeco battery pack forward to get neutral CG, so it might not take much for you. Surprised it balanced that far back.. did you mount batteries or such aft of the center tube? All I have in fuse aft of tube is rudder servo and AR7100 receiver. Keep us posted...

i tried mine @ 4inches back and thought it was good! mite even go a tad more! my plane was flairing up when i killed the throttle, also on up lines if i reduced the throttle it would pull to the canopy.
When i got home i checked the thrust and was very supriesed to find i had 2.72 degrees down thrust! i have since flown again, and boy what a difference! she flys so much more true now! had to reprograme my knife edge mixing!
no more pulling up when you reduce the power!
My fire wall on the engine box was actually glued in crooked! suggest every one to check your thrust!

I moved the batteries above the fuel tank for the initial flights. We will see how it does at that location and adjust from there. How did you check the thrust angle?

ericrcpilot,
thrust angles are checked from straight and level flight and vertical flight. Noticing the direction that the plane travels, or pulls, will indicate if its off or not. Google rc trim charts, you'll find what you need. All the charts are the same, some may print or be more readable than others. They show a lot of other trims, but basically you want to fixate on obtaining a good straight and level and true vertical trim. Getting a good trim an be a pain in the waazoo sometimes, but well worth the effort. As salerno mentioned, it makes a huge difference, and you won't be fighting with the plane to keep it where you want it.

Yes exactly what radical said. i check my thrust mostly in vertical lines. but mine was bad enough that flying at straight and level at half throttle then pulling to idle would see the plane rise quite alot. this made for pretty tricky landings too, as plane would keep rising untill it stalled unless i "flew" it down!
I have hanger 9 digital incidence meter which also allows you to check things like thrust by bolting it to the engine and giving a read out in degrees! very handy! also it can be zeroed at any angle so you dont need to get the plane level to check things!

Ha Ha! yeah adding a smoke system also helps to make it quiter! and tightening the screws with a left hand screw driver makes them harder to vibrate out!

you can buy cheap gaskets from DL engines. they will also fit DA. or you can buy some gasket paper from your local auto store and cut your own. i also use a bit of red gasket maker and red lock tite on the bolts. you can still get bolts out quite easily when you need.

RE: Dietrich Extra 260 50cc
I have not had a chance to get it up yet. Hopefully this weekend. After this weekend it will get tough here as daylight savings is on, and I will not have time after work anymore. The CG should be fine with the batteries moved forward. Hopefully I will be able to move them back a little later.
