RC Aerodyne Chaos 600 LE Build
My Chaos 600 from RC Aerodyne arrived today. I got the LE version with TT. I’ve build and flown the Trex ESP, Trex CF and The HK 600 GT from Hobby King so I though Id go ahead and do a build thread on this one to share my thoughts comparing this kit to those I’ve built and flown.

Whats in da box
1st Thing I noticed when I opened the box was the canopy. I like the paint job and its fiberglass and has a good clear coat. It beats the HK 600 white plastic canopy hands. down.
As I started pulling everything out of the box I noticed that everything was packed pretty well. At 1st glance everything seems to have survived the UPS trip. The bags are all labeled and there are groups of bags labeled within larger bags. This is the same way my ESP was packed and it made finding parts a breeze. I’ll have to say this is another step up from the HK 600. Nothing in my HK kit was labeled and I had to hut for parts that where not in the bag for the step I was on.

Time to start opening bags! Head assembly
Everything for the head assembly came in a large bag with the sub steps packed in separate bags.
This is nice, it makes finding the parts for the assembly easy and I dont have a lot of loose parts floating around my workspace. The Align ESP kit does this also. The HK kit had items from differnt steps mixed up here and there.

I’m not going to go into step by step detail here. The manual does a good job of that. I’m just going to do an overview and note anything good or bad that I find.
1st Step in the head assembly is attaching the grips to the yoke. This gave me my first look at the bearings. This is one of the parts that I worry about in the knockoff kits. I replaced the bearings in the grips on my HK 600, they had to much play in them. It wasn’t a problem with this kit. All the grip bearings turn smooth and don’t have any play.
The thrust bearings looked good as well. They seem to be on a par with the Align bearings but only flight time will tell.

While putting the flybar links togather I ran into a problem. The holes in the links are to small. I've replaced them with spare Align ball links I had on hand.
talked to Cliff from RC Aerodyne today, My Blue thunder should be here soon While I was on the phone I mentioned the Link problem. They have new links coming in to replace the ones currently in the kits. They are also making some changes to the manual before they post it on there site.
I have bought scale fuses from RC Aerodyne in the past and have found them to be very good about responding to customer feedback. Its one of the things thats kept them on my bookmark list

I just finished up the head. The quality of the swash looks good. Better than the HK and about the same as the Trex esp.
The link rods also appear to be pretty good. Thats a nice supprise, I've replace them on most of the other knockoff kits I've built.
So far I'm happy with the kits quality.

Frame assembly
I got the frames assembled. The frames on the Chaos are wider than the Trex 600 ESP.
I have a spare Trex esp base plate that I measured. It’s 47 mm wide the Chaos is 54 mm. The landing gear mounts are in the same exact location so putting this into a fuse designed for the Trex 600 esp shouldn’t be any problem. I’ll be putting a scorpion motor in this for my HV setup and the extra width will be a big plus. With the Trex esp I had to cut the side frames to get it in. With the extra room I shouldn’t have to on the Chaos. While I had the two base plates out doing measurements It gave me a great comparison of the plastics used. If it weren’t for one being wider I could have easily mistaken the two. They had the same flexibility and felt the same.
I had a small problem with the base plate. The nubs on the side that help line it up where a hair bigger than the holes they go into. A couple of seconds with a file took care of the problem.
Another thing I liked about the frames that’s worth mentioning is that this kit has the 3rd bearing block. For some reason Align dropped the 3rd bearing on the esp. Some guys mod it to put one in.

I installed the servos and Motor this weekend.I did run into one small problem. The Elevator servo case was to short for the servo I was using. I was able to space it out with a servo retainer to get it installed. Got the tail built .
No pics, camara problems. The kit comes with CF Boom, metal pitch slider, CF tail blades as well as metal tail servo mount. For the proce this kit comes with a lot of the stuff I would have expected from a more expensive kit.

got everything finished. I did have one other small issue. The front of the canopy has to be trimmed slightly to get a good fit. Its also hitting the main just slightly on booth sides. The bolt that hold the canopy pins where long enough to allow me to use a nut as a space. problem solved.
The rain stopped long enough for me to get in a couple quick trim flights in the yard.

LOl. Thats not my best time. I built my trex esp 1 1/2 days It got its test hop the next morning. Amazing what you can get done when the wife and kids are out of town. I've put 5 600's togather, I've got a better build sequence than the manual

LOL I bet you do!
The battery in my wife's GPS died. I watched a youtube video of how to replace the battery. It took eight minuets for the guy to do it and he knows what he's doing. I told my wife that translates into 80 minuets for me and just to buy another one because $85 map update + $30 for new battery + going through this install is way more trouble than the $140 for a new one.

THe setup in the video is a 6S. I wanted to compaire it to my HK 600 and CF Trex 600 that are on 6s. I just finished upgrading the motor scorpion 4035 - 500 and esc to run 12S. I'm hoping to get some flights in on it this weekend. It should mild to wild on that setup. I know my Trex 600 esp did.

Mild to Wild
I got some flights in with the 12S setup this weekend. It was good on 6s , with 12S it’s an animal!
I set the HS p governed to 2150 and on 12S I didn’t bog at all. Lots of power on tap. The Heli tracks very well making large loops much easier. It’s just about time to put the big outdoor Helis away for the winter here in the north east. I’ll be looking forward to wringing this out some more in the spring.
I think this Helis quality is very close to that of the Trex ESP. There were some minor issues in the build (ball links , Canopy trim, baseplate trim) but I’d say the overall quality is high. I’m very pleased with its flight performance so far. I’d put it dead level with my ESP before I went FBL with it.
I had planned on putting this into a scale fuse but I’m not sure I’ll be able to bring myself to do it, I was having way to much fun with it POD and Boom. I may have to get another Chaos for that.
