RE: Flite Streak for Tee Dee
Greggles47,
Many years ago I built a Flite Streak Junior for someone as a trainer. It was flown with a .15 Medalian. The weight and wood sizes for the one I am currently building would not hold up to a .15. I plan to use the .051 seen in the other picture. My target weight is less than 10 OZ. My OSMax .15 weights 4 OZ by itself. I hope to get some more work done on it this weekend.

RE: Flite Streak for Tee Dee
When the Ringmaster Jr was relatively new, Ihad a Green Head Torp 15 that weighed about three ounces on one that flew at a very high rate of speed with a 7/6 prop, and I used an 8/3 instead to slow it down. Years later, I put that engine in a Jr. Streak, and it was too fast once again (for anything but combat practice). I filled the mount holes with stubs of dowel, and redrilled it for the 15X of the day (so-called "steelfin"), which with an 8/4, was matched up just right.
I also flew the Jr Streak with a Medallion 09, with which is was moderately fast (actually, I didn't fly it much. It was built for my son, age 6 at the time). We had a Baby Streak about the same time, powered by a couple of different Atwood 049s, and it was a very good flier.
I would imagine that expanding the Baby while retaining its light constrction, will be a very nice plane.

RE: Flite Streak for Tee Dee
As a youngster, my favorite was a full sized Flite Streak without the wing tips, "flaps" and landing gear which was powered by a modified K&B green head 29. The only problemI had with that plane was it had to be hand launched by someone else. Ahhh the memories of our youth...
Ready to test fit the flap horn and install the belcrank with lead outs. I will be using .012" braided steel for the lead outs and .008" braided lines.

I have only good memories of a Flight Streak Jr. I flew mine with a Fox .19 and a Testors/McCoy .19. Very precise control on '60 lines. I also liked the Jr Satan with K&B .19.

Another Jr. and full size Flite Streak flyer. the full size was powered by the usual Fox .35, while the Jr. was powered by an A-M 2.5 cc Diesel. Both flew very well, and I still have the A-M.

I built 3 or 4 and were powered by fox 19's. Made a good combat trainer. I could get 85 mph on 52' lines with a grish 8x6 on missle mist, no streamer. Lots of fun in 1965.

Hi George, I think you're on the right track, 10 oz for 230 sq"s will
work just fine for a TD .051. Barry Baxter's Wee Duper Zilch flew
great using a PAW .049; the WDZ has a 240sq" wing, and I believe
it weighed around 10 ozs also. I have flown several Ringmaster Jrs(195sq"s)
modified for the PAW .049 SBR diesel engine. my conclusion was that the
Ring Jr is too small for that engine. The Flite Streak jr will fly very well in spite
of a heavier wing loading; but it will be spectacular with a lighter wing loading. Good Luck;

An .051 won't fly a Jr. Streak very well in my opinion. The jr streak has a mighty thick wing for anything much under a .15 size engine and a 7" dia. prop. A small diesel can swing a 7" prop OK, but a glow .051 won't do it very well. Even at 10 oz all up weight that .051 is going to be blowing it's brains out trying to move that big thick wing around the circle. Just my opinion for what it's worth.

I agree on a .15 or a .19 in the Jr FS. Every time I flew mine they had this thing called "Crosswind" and my Fox .19 did a great job of keeping the lines tight.
There are lots of models that can be flown with smaller engines but I'm more comfortable with more power than not enough. Running backwards to keep the lines tight is not something I'm into these days.

I agree with Dan. Most of my Flite Streak Jr.'s have had Max .15 steel fins. I have also Tried a Webra Mk-1 diesel that performed well, and one that first had a Rivers Silver Streak, then a FROG .21. The Rivers and the FROG were too heavy and the plane only flew round and round...FAST. I did not want to add weight to balance it so I opted to rebuild the mounts and install a smaller engine. It's still around and currently has a Fox .15X in it.
My FS Jr's are for sport flying so they are built with kit wood, with no effort to lighten them.
One of the problems is that engines have increased so much in power that old 1/2A planes are not large enough for today's 1/2A engines. This ripples up and for a modern .15, a profile Peacemaker is a better match than a FS Jr, IMHO.

Of you can build a 10 -12 oz airplane, a TD 051 should fly it very well. I've used MAS 6x3 cut down to 5.5x3 on TD 049's and fairly large 1/2A's with good results. If it doesn't fly to suit, I'd recommend a Medallion 09. A TD 09 powers a Jr Flitestreak very well at about 16 oz. I used 57 ft 012 lines to get it slow enough to fly a fast stunt pattern.

RE: Flite Streak for Tee Dee
I have built a plane of my own design, based loosely off of the 1/2A combat plane called the "Cheap imitation" (by Gene Pape and John Thompson) I built the wing out to 30" span (24" original design), added a full body simalur to Dale Kirn's "Torky" only scaled up to fit wing, added flaps and called it "Gil's Folly". It was a blast to fly. On 42' (.008") lines it would do an overhead figure 8 without going slack on the lines. That's why I wanted to do a intermidiate design of the flight streak, something large enough to slow it down a bit but light enough to fly well.

It's not a problem to fly a 10 oz airplane with a 30" wing span with a .051 if the wing is not to thick, like a typical 1/2A wing. But when you consider that the Jr flite streak wing is almost 1-1/2" thick, then you add a degree of difficulty which is not quite in the scope of 1/2 A power. I'm not saying it won't fly. I'm just saying I don't think it will fly well (And l suppose our definition of "WELL" may be different) with all the drag of that thick airfoil. But good luck to you. I hope you prove me wrong.

Okay... Thanks, Gungadin.... Put covering on top of wing... Still no tips yet but Iputeverythingon the scale... wow, 8.3 oz still on target but was hoping for a little less. Plan to use surgical tubing bladder for tank, so that won't add much weight. I could have use other materials to get weight down, but hey... use what ya got...

RE: Flite Streak for Tee Dee
Tips are covered and getting ready for trim. Going to use chrome to simulate a canopy and also for trim on wings etc. Need to install elevator and flaps along with control linkage first I think.
Hopefully some pics late today...
