DLE 30 vs. OS 1.60
Hey All,
I've found spurious tidbits comparing these two but looking for some solid info.
I have a Great Planes Edge 540 Performance Series GP/EP ARF 78" that I want to keep light - Not interested in 3D just IMAC. I had a similar setup with the Hangar 9 Cap a few years back with an OS 1.60 and the power was fine for me on an APC 18x6W.
Now I'd like to get away from glow fuel - And hate to throw a 50 or 55 on this plane - Just seems overkill.
Anyhow - Power-wise is the DLE 30 equal or better than the OS 1.60? Sounds like the DLE 30 will swing a 19x8 (Zoar) pretty close to what the OS would swing the APC 18x6W?
Weight is close but the 30 isn't too much heavier... Looks to be perhaps 6-8ish ounces with a Pitts style muffler + ignition + battery.
Thanks in advance for the input!

RE: DLE 30 vs. OS 1.60
Well, specs from Tower show that it would work, since both engines are at the low end of the recommended range, even more with the rear carburetor and intake flaps of the DLE 30:
Engine:
1.60-1.80 cu in (26-30 cc) 2 stroke
1.80-2.10 cu in (30-34 cc) 4 stroke
1.90-2.60 cu in (32-43 cc) gasoline
Engine:
1.60-1.80 cu in (26-30 cc) 2 stroke
1.80-2.10 cu in (30-34 cc) 4 stroke
1.90-2.60 cu in (32-43 cc) gasoline

RE: DLE 30 vs. OS 1.60
To begin with I am a Dealer, builder and avid flyer.
For many years I used an os 160. Great engine but, I soon tired of using a gallon of 22 dollar glo fuel in an afternoon of flying and the mess to clean off the plane from the glo exhaust.Planes that I used to use the os 160 on I now power with a DLE 30CC. Plenty of power for your needs. To give you an example, one of the planes I fly is a giant scale GEEBEE Y Sportster. It has a 82" wingspan and the cowl is 10" diameter. I use a DLE 30 on it with a 18X 8 prop. It is quite fast to say the least and I can do a vertical rolling climb. Need I say more. Think of it this way since I am a DLE dealer I have all engine ranges I can use and I use a DLE 30 on my GEEBEE.
I hope this has helped you in making a decision.

RE: DLE 30 vs. OS 1.60
I have had both motors. If I remember correctly the O.S. 1.60 with Bisson pitts, perry pump and aluminum mount weighed about 50 oz's. The DLE 30 (motor, ignition, muffler, stand-offs and ignition battery), depending on the size of the battery can beat that weight by a couple of oz's. My O.S. turned an 18X6 at around 9000 RPM tuned for flight and from the link below, the DLE will turn an 18X8 around 8200 RPM. I have ran an 18X10 and a 19X8 on my DLE. The 19X8 will turn around 7500 and I cant remember the 18X10 numbers.
Here is a link to some DLE 30 prop data.

Something to think about when comparing the weight. The supplied muffler for the DLE is very light but also very noisy. I bought a Bissson for mine. I have not weighed the two but it is noticeable heavier. It is a much better unit IMHO, bet there is a small weight penalty.
