Summit - 2 questions on motor & batteries
Hi,
After getting hooked with my Savage on trucks (so nice not having to worry that its too windy to fly, LOL) I'm starting to heavily consider a Summit as a bad weather/winter buy for something to play with since it comes pre-waterproofed... my 2 questions to current owners & everyone else:
1)the brushed Titan motor... how long does it last? I've always been told brushed has poorer lifespans than brushless... has anyone converted to brushless? If yes, with what components at what cost?
2)What battery packs if staying brushed do you run? I'm seeking out something big that'll have long run times.

RE: Summit - 2 questions on motor & batteries
The titans on the summit last a good long while. I wouldn't put brushless in it. It will not crawl, it'll become a raised erevo brushless, and the stock tires are horrible for anything above like 25 mph. As for run times, you could run lipo, but you would need a lva or lvc. Brushed motors are inefficient, therefore you should expect shorter runtimes, so get multiple batteries. One more comment, if you run lipo you may lose the waterproofness.

RE: Summit - 2 questions on motor & batteries
LVA= Low voltage alarm
LVC= Low voltage cutoff
As for the nimh packs, I would say maybe 5000 mah. My friend used to have a summit and he ran intellect 4500 mah batteries. I don't buy nimh, so I wouldn't know of where they are cheap at. You could try Towerhobbies.com and most of the time you may need to solder you own traxxas connector on.
*Note: When looking for the biggest pack; look at the dimensions of the battery on the website. The summit battery boxes are: 156mm Length X 50mm Depth X 29mm Height.

if you switch over lipo you would just need to buy a new charger and you can get lipos cheaper than nimh and get longer runtime

ESC needs to be re-programmed for LIPO batteries. You can do this easy by following the manuals instructions.Its to prevent low voltage problems with the batteries.
On the revo with the monster mamba set up you can plug it into the pc and set all the fine details, like at what voltage do you want the failsafe to kickin, so you can set it a little higher than normal and your batteries last for more cycles.
LIPO and brushless is the way to go, learn it once and never look back.

lipos are waterproof. if they were not, they would burst into flames... from what i understand they are sealed from air, so they should be from water.
i ran lipo on my evx-2 esc(the same that comes with the summit) and never had a problem. you need a LVA that cost 3-4$ on ebay. thats it.
they is NO reprograming of the esc, since it does NOT have a LVC...

and there is NO resons to run nimh when you can have lipos for half the price , and get better run-time, power, lightweght,,,
edit, and to make sure your lipos are waterproof, all you need is to put some silicone where the wires comes out the case. and if your anal about it, put some dielectric grease on the connectors.

RE: Summit - 2 questions on motor & batteries
I just recently changed to brushless and I couldn't be happier. I put the Tekin RX8 ESC and 2650 motor. I use the 5000mah NIMH Duratrax batteries with the Traxxas plugs. With this set up it's much faster now. It also still crawls very well. The Canyon tires are NOT made to go over 25mph. At top speed the tires are about 9in tall and very hard to keep under control.

The stock Titan motor is holding up great for me 7+ months of abuse. I run Durantrax 7-cell ni-mh and i love them. Got them at tower hobbies and they come with traxxas plugs and are designed as flat pack to fit right inside Summit batt location. I have changed out my spur gear to a 62t which gave me a noticeable increase in top speed. I am now running HP Goliath Wheels/Tires which are the same size as the stock canyons but are much more low profile and flatter for better cornering. I do a little more bashing that crawling with my summit.

I recommend if you want a really fast MT, dont buy a Summit. Just Buy a Revo or Stampede VXL. If you want an allaround badass truck that can do more than any other truck and is waterproof, buy a summit and leave it stock (except for Pinion and Spur gear changes for speed).
