Default E-flite Super Cub 25e ARF

Hello All,

I did not see a thread on this so I decided to start one. I just picked up the E-flite Super Cub 25e ARF on Monday; the following is what I have discovered while assembling this ARF.

*** NOTE ***
Read the manual VERY CAREFULLY; if you do not... you can make mistakes that will damage parts of your new plane! Please do not say you were not warned if you do not read each step thoroughly prior to executing that step!!!!

Kit Quality:

1: The kit quality is excellent; they used very good wood on this kit so I have no issues here.
2: Everything is built straight.
3: All control hinges are also straight and either pre-drilled or cut for you.
4: The hardware package is first rate so you should have no issues there.
5: Covering is applied very well and almost no wrinkles were noticed; however as you work with the plane during assembly you may start to notice wrinkles. Do not worry about these until you have finished your assembly; you can then go back and tighten everything up again.
6: Landing gear (both mains and tailwheel) are also excellent; I was very impressed with what I found. This was even a step up from the gear found on the Hangar 9 1/4 Scale J3 Cub ARF.
7: You will also find a great deal of very nice scale details, parts and accessories to really enhance the appearance of your Super Cub.
8: The cowl is fiberglass (not that cheap flimsy plastic) and VERY WELL MADE and very well detailed!

Here are a few misses (hope you read this E-flite/Horizon Hobbies!)

1: NO PILOT (By the way... a pilot bust sitting in a seat does not look right; you really should have created a full body soft pilot and INCLUDED it with the kit).
2: Do not make us go through a list of individual parts to make up the lighting kit. Put the appropriate parts together as a bundle... ONE PART NUMBER TO ORDER!!!
3: You included a very scale instrument panel with the 1/4 scale J3 and you only included a sticker with this kit (unless you buy the optional cockpit kit); what was the point of producing a scale kit if you short change the plane and the customer? How about creating a basic and deluxe version of this kit? The deluxe version would include all of the options you are making us but separately.

Summary:

I feel that the kit is very well made; great hardware; awesome landing gear; super details and really has a great deal of scale fidelity. I am still working through the assembly phase; however I still feel that this arf is definitely worth the money being asked for it. Don't be afraid of getting this one... it is a beauty!!!

Overview

For over half a century, Piper’s Super Cub has been a favorite of general aviation pilots who spend most of their time off the beaten path. Its respectable power, excellent short field performance and rugged design have made it perfect for back country transportation, towing gliders or simply getting away from it all. The E-flite Platinum Series Super Cub 25e expertly captures the look and feel of this aviation classic with an accurate scale outline unlike anything ever seen in its power class.

This new SuperCub looks Great, However the weight & wing load tell me it will fly like a sport plane. I do hope Horizon produces it in larger sizes, 1/5 & 1/4 scale would be Super!

SkyPilot101,

I would have to agree with you I would like to see this sized up to 1/4 and 1.3rd Scales as well.
They are probably going to judge that investment based on the sales of this plane.

I will be taking this out early next week for its maiden flight... I will update this thread with my results.

if Horizon decides to offer a quarter and third scale version it would be nice to offer a clipped wing option as well.

This appears to be up to the standards of the Dave Patrick Super Cub. Now if it would just be 1/4 scale. BTW, has anyone ever seen an example of a full scale clipped wing super cub?

I just maidened my Super Cub and it went very well. Easy straight take off. The Power 32 is a perfect match for this plane. Differential is definitely needed for smooth turns. The manual explains how much to set. This cub, as most do, tends to float in on landing. Set it down on the mains and let it roll out. The tail wheel with its very weak springs leaves a lot to be desired and ground handling is not very good especially in any wind. I plan on replacing mine with a Sullivan tail wheel assembly. That is, IMO, the only problem with this ARF. Cockpit kit looks great and is worth the extra time to install. The lights on the other hand, while pretty cool, aren't the easiest install and are hard to see in daylight. The finished plane is a beauty and attracts a lot of attention at the field. If you like scale cubs, this one is a keeper.

I maidened mine this weekend. Beautiful plane. Cockpit kit is great but I didn't do the lights, they seem cool but I've heard they're not worth the hassle.

Plane flies great. I'm actually running mine on 3S with a Hoffman motor that's equivalent to a Power 25, 40A ESC, and 13x6.5 prop. I'm at 5000 feet above sea level in Colorado. Total power is 385 watts at around 34 amps WOT and approximately 64 watts/ lb. Flying weight is right at 6lb with this setup. Mine will take off on a rough grassy field at 3/4 throttle and cruise slowly at 1/2 throttle, and will loop from level flight. I used this stuff because I had it lying around and I figured it would fly the plane fine. I didn't want to invest in a bunch of 4S batteries just for this plane as I have a ton of 3s. After 9 minute flights, I'm only putting 2000mah back into a 3600 battery...sweet. I've got planes that are 200 watts/ lb, I didn't need that for this plane. The recommended power setup should be more than adequate. I'm no 'scale nazi' but I think my power setup is probably closer to scale and I kind of wanted to see what that was like.

The shock absorbing landing gear is great, the plane flies slow well, stalls are predictable. Some folks on another forum were complaining of 'tip stall' but you've got to fly this with the rudder, coordinate turns, and keep the power on in turns...just like the full scale version. I saw a video of some guy blaming the plane for augering in after he tried to make a very tight downwind turn in a 10mph wind with about 15mph of ground speed...of course it's going to spiral in at that point.

The flaps work great for landing and you can just about deadstick it, point it down, and land like a feather. Mine takes off best with no flaps.

My only gripe is that the silly springy tailwheel, while scale, just doesn't provide adequate ground handling during takeoff...it's squirrely as all get out and forget trying to take off in a stiff crosswind. The springs could be stiffened a little bit but it would also stress out the rudder servo more. I haven't come up with a solution yet but I haven't really tried either. I have about 10 flights on mine so far and I like it for what it is. E-Flite/ Horizon's ARFs ar absolutely top notch in my book and this one doesn't disappoint; they really do their R&D.

I tried cutting about a third off of the springs to get more tension but I didn't notice much difference flying today. Still pretty bad. I just installed a Sullivan tail wheel on my Super Cub. Surprisingly the holes lined up perfectly with the existing holes. Had to shave a little off the base for a good fit. Doesn't look as good as the original but it should definitely provide solid performance.

Yup, a bigger model in the same colour scheme would be great!

But IMO this small -e- version can also be a good platform for an -e- to -glow- conversion!

Is the "y" at the end of the N number suppose to be lower case? Shouldn't it be upper case?

I am using the eflite 25 motor, castle creations 75 amp esc and a 4 cell 3300Mah li-po. Recommended prop is an APC 13x6.5. I am powering the servos with a seperate NiMH battery pack. The decal was done by our local club member.

Had the maiden flight on the super cub. Flies like a cub. Aileron differential is a must. Flaps work great. We felt that this plane does NOT have a tendency to tip stall. Stalls are straight forward. Using the e-flite 25 with an apc 13x6.5 prop has ample power for me. Flew 7 minutes on a 3300 pack and used 2500 MaH. E-Flite has done a wonderful job on this plane. Should be a keeper.

Hellcat- I LOVE that last picture!!!

I just got mine, and I'll be doing a review on the E-flite Super Cub for RCU. I will be installing the light kit and the scale cockpit.

As of now, I am waiting for the light kit to arrive, but watch for the review... It will be coming!
