Default thoughts on a possible project

every year when winter comes, i start wanting 4wd RC's and ones that can tackle the snow.

I already bought a blizzard EV, and a redcat volcano epx pro(will waterproof) and have a scx10 that i have some 2.2 duellies i can put on.

but i also have a part rustler and parts stampede chassis's. And the pics show a direction i am considering going in.

I still have a set of these huge 12mm wheels, 6&1/2 inches tall and 4 inches wide. a pair of trannies...pede chassis ect.

I also have a set of dubro plane skis coming, that i may make a mount for them to put on the front.

The main part i am missing to make this truck run would be a EVX2 system and motors.

So, what do you guys think? Would this be a cool truck if it were built?

Why do you want to use fake looking wheels with a real looking body?get some aluminum beadlock rims and crwler tires please.

try finding any tires with a 12mm hex rim as big as these tires!
plus, i already have them a set of large 12mm hex beadlock rims with massive crawler tires aint cheap.
I dont care for the look of the rims either, but i like trying to build something out of parts i have laying around.

as for the duelly idea, that would be easier. but slapping a pair of stampede tires together adds alot of strain to the stub axle and the driveshafts.

by using a pair of trannies, i can get the same amount of traction as duelies while not adding much stress to the drivetrain.

For now, i think i will just run 1 set of the rear tires...with a mild BL system and mount the skis on the front once they arrive.

I have seen some rusty and pede vids with normal stampede tires and skis and they do pretty well in the snow. and these tires have a fair bit larger foot print than stampede tires.

Put some chains on the rear of a stock stampede and go wherever you want. honestly the biggest problem i have with 2wd r/c's is the fronts packing snow up on them. Some ribbed fronts or skis would fix that though.

got one ski mounted. I didnt realize when i bought it that the package only contained 1 ski[&:]
Add a piece of alloy...and bam!

Total cost here is half the kits they sell for the traxxas models....and the skis are larger than on those kits.

bypass the outrunner...go VXL on 3s with a 7/10 prop. that should produce some series speed!

Im gonna try the skis with a mild BL system and the spiked tires. if it still gets stuck in the snow to often, then ill go EVX esc and duel trannies.

lol, a VXL system on 3s doesn't last long as an ESC... maybe a fireball though...

a few years back i made a fan boat. it was OK with a brushed motor, but then i slapped my vxl on it and ran 3s. it was fast even on my lawn!
My vxl systems have always done fine on 3s.

The stampede has a novatech ESC and 3300kv motor. nothing fancy, but will be plenty of power on 2s for running in the snow.

I have to lock the diffs, build the other ski and make some body mounts. OH, and wait for snow....lol. Should have some in the next week or 2.

I'd stay away from a dual rear axle setup if possible as I think that would make it harder to steer even with the ski. Doesn't hurt to try though.

So I got the skis mounted on my stampede, dropped in a BL system and 2s lipo and took it out for a spin.

Not a ton of snow on the ground yet, but I wanted to get a test run to see what improvements it may need.

See for yourself.... and share your thoughts on how to make it better!

Put a propped outrunner in the front, and it will destroy what you have. Plus skis all around...

Im thinking i may stretch the chassis 2 inches, and move the battery forward. That and raise the rear suspension.

pics of how i made the ski mount
i drilled a hole for the stub axle to go threw, then made a notch for the allum to go around the steering arm, and another notch so it wouldnt hit the a-arm.
Nothing fancy, but seems to work well.

A Positrack is a quite complicated thing, and would be pretty hard to cram it all in an RC tranny case.

A locked diff/spool is not Positrack. Positrack is a mechanism inside the differential that locks it under load or slippage, but remains unlocked the rest of the time so it can act as a normal differential.
