TBM DV8R, Shui Turbinator, Ultra Flash: JetCat P-70
What do you guys think?
I fly from a 500' grass field and I know it's a little under powered for the DV8R but all show the flying weights around 22lbs.
Any thoughts or experience with these combos would be appreciated. Note: I will uprade in the future to a 30lb turbine for one of these airframes as well.
Thanks,
Mike

If anyone has a video out there with a DV8R flying with a p-70 please post. I can only find one on youtube and there flying from a paved runway.
Thanks,
Mike

I have a P-70 and its a neat little engine for its time, but thrust wise, its kind of a dog... We had it in a Turbinator, and on grass it was a *real* challenge to get it off unless the grass was really short or thin. Weight wise, the Turbinator and the DV8R are about equal and the DV8R has more wing (and fuselage) area, so it probably will make it out, but you won't be happy with it. I also had a DV8R (kit-built) with a P-80 in it, and it would take off in less than 200' on pavement, but I never tried it on grass. In the air, the P-80 in the DV8R was less than satisfying - and I'm not a "200 MPH" type flyer. With a P-70, I think it would be like flying a ducted fan.
I think that the best plane of the 3 for a P-70 would be a Shulman Aviation Turbinator. They are probably 3 lbs lighter than ours, and so I think they would do much better off grass than ours does. We're putting a P-120 in our Turbinator, BTW. Our Turbinator has some "scale" modifications that make it heavier than stock and the ARFs are built light too.

I agree with Bob, I have a P-120 in my kit built Turbinator and am swapping in a P-70 after the 125% gets done. Mine is monocoted so it is lighter than most.

All good info guys thank you. It almost seems the 30lb thrust turbines are the norm now for most sport airframes.
