Default hard starting DA50

50:1 approx, change plugs ,non-ethenol premium gas,and Its still a bear to flip start,In fact it won't,I have to try to use a starter ,choke it and then it will fire.it will restart will a flip or two unless it sits for an hour. My question is what can I do to improve its starting ,without buying some giant stater and dragging out a car battery?I have a nice new DA50 powered P-51 and I really don't want to chew up the spinner tryin to get it started .Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Coke on, 3/4 throttle, flip till it pops, choke off, high idle. Flip and it should start in 4-6 flips.

Might have to do this a couple time but most will work after one time.

If tuned right and cold you will not be able to get full throttle until engine warms up.

As always make sure plane is tied off or someone is holding the plane.

I've seen the first two things I'd check already.

Low end lean and choke plate seating fully.

Milton outlined the starting sequence I've been using forever on gas planes.

Hey Dave.....

My DA-60 fooled me as well and I've since seen other references to the single cylinder DA engines requiring something of a different start procedure.

Now I've played with ZDZ which MUST have the choke plate fully closed or you're not 'gonna get 'em going, but my two cylinder DA's are not that fussy. The 60 is that fussy and I chased problems for awhile to the detriment of my rotator cuff and I found out the choke plate must be fully closed on the 60 just like a ZDZ and I mean snuggly closed. I've also found that having the throttle open about half way as someone mentioned, is required. I won't pull fuel if the throttle is set at idle and the last thing is the low speed needle setting; got to be rich enough.

Hope that helps....

Zeeb, I have found that soldering over that hole in the choke plate helps. Dan.

Thats a SWEET looking P-51.

I've never had to solder over the hole of a properly seated choke plate.

I think by the way he says he has to let engine set before trying to restart...says his choke is working good. I have found once you get a engine warmed up and tuned well,is to after a flight or test run...set the idle speed at a smooth idle, then shut power off to reciever so the throttle servo stays at that speed. Shut off TX and try a restart. You will find the best throttle opening for starting. Give that a try Guys, it works for me. Capt,n
