The Magnum 46 XLS and Thunder Tiger 46 Pro are the better two and very comparable to each other in power BUT the Magnum has far better customer service through Hobby People Thunder Tiger is through Ace and there service is horrible and there has been many cases where a Magnum engine is out of warranty and it gets repaired or replaced free of charge, There was one case I am aware of the engine was damaged in a crash so it was sent in and with a letter saying how it was damaged and charges for the repair where expected, A week later he received a package with a brand new engine with no charge. I would go with the Magnum.

Hi,
The 46LA is different from the other engines because it is a plain bearing engine. This means instead of Ball-Bearings supporting the output shaft, it runs on Bushings.
What does this mean? Well for starters there is a noticeable difference in performance. A BB 46 will spin a prop (probably around 1000-2000RPM) faster = more power-also more expensive and slightly heaver.
A 46LA would be alright for a trainer, but it would be wise to invest in a BB 46.
The Magnum and Thunder Tigre are both great engines from what I know.

Which .46 to buy
Take a hard look at the MECOA .46 (called LEO from Just engines) for $49.00. Its ball bearing, twin needle clone of an OS .46. All of the MECOAS at my field run great as does mine. I'll try to report a head to head test against my friend's $110.00 OS FX .46 on an 11x6 prop.
Can't beat $49.00

It's only $49n with a trade in. $69 without. Another option is the Tiger Shark .52 from http://www.kangkeusa.com/Engines/specs.htm
for $79.77--a little more power, at the same weight.
I've got one, and the service is as good as Hobby People's for their Magnum Products. Ebay usually has them, brand new, for much less.
Out of the bunch you have named, Magnum gets my vote. I have 6 magnums including the .46, all are great running engines. BTW, if you see a good deal on an ASP .46, or SC .46--they are the same as the Magnums, but with a dif case. Now that I think about it the ASP Super S52AII Engine was on sale at www.goldscallop.com for $79. That's what I'd do.

I've got a TT 46 pro as have a number of people at my club. After buying one of these i don't think i'll be getting any other brand of 46 engine. Very powerful, easy to tune and good value for money. If you decide to get one I'm sure you wont be disappointed.

As a beginner, I would recommend the TT.46. Awsome engine with plently of power for trainer and 40 size aerobatics. I have had 4 with great results. I promise you wont regret it.

Just wait until you get a bad one. "Thundertiger Bad Service At Ace Hobbies :"
http://www.rcuniverse.com/showthread...ght=tt+service
Search: tt service or Ace service or thunder tiger service, and you come up with nothing but bad news.
ABN vs ABC? I like the ABC or AAC(chrome liner). It'll probably last a lifetime but if it doesn't, you'd like the mfg to stand behind their product. Mecoa has great service, but Leo does not(same engine, like asp and magnum), magnum(hobby people), tower, tiger shark(kangke), and MDS(horizon) have great service also, but don't get an MDS unless it's a .58 or better the .48's are dif to get adjusted. Service has to be a big part of the decision..

I would think that service is not always the best in every case on many brands and ACE may be worse than some. However I have never had a bad TT .46. Guess I am lucky. But I stand by my recommendation. This is a great engine for the price.

Stay away from OS LA engines. i would recomenD the TT first and the OS FX. Unfortunatley OS changed for Chrome to Nickle several years ago and thir engines seem to have suffered for it. I know many people with the TT and all have been very happy with them.

I have 5 of the TT46 engines and one 42. They are fantastic. Put a Tower Hobby muffler on the 46 and you have a real powerhouse. I had one problem with the first 46 I bought that I caused. I sent it to Ace and they had it back to me in perfect condition in 3 weeks with no questions asked.
The TT 46 is easy to start, easy to tune and idles at a lower RPM than any engine I've ever had with instant response when you hit the throttle. A number of guys in our club have the TT 46 with no complaints. I'd go with the TT.

I would take a TT engine over an LA engine any time and twice on Sunday. Have never had bad service from TT. They have taken very very good care of me. Had a problem with one item in particular and they sent me a new one within a week and told me to keep the old one and use it if I could or pitch it. They are great to deal with!

.46 engine choice
MANY of my friends have TT .46 pro engines and they preform as advertised but they still cost aprox $80.00. I plan to test with a tach but a $49.00 (w/trade) MECOA .46 runs great. I am not convinced that the extra $30.00 is worth it. The tach-o-meter will soon tell. The Tower/GMS muffler definitely improves power.

I totally agree with FrancisPerson... The MECOA .46 is great ! Another great engine is the GMS .47 (also known as the Tower Hobbies .47 ABC BB).... GREAT power for little money !!!!

This, That, or The Other...
The Magnum XLS .46 will have a true ABC construction while the Thunder Tiger PRO .46 will have ABN. Both are fine engines. All of the OS LA series is JUNK IMO. Yes, there are problems with ACE/TT service these days...hopefully they will pull their head out soon Magnum offers great service when needed. To date I have only seen one new TT engine that I thought was below par and after running it, it turned out to be just fine. Parts support from ACE currently SUCKS!, so that could be a problem. Still, all in all, I would choose the TT...once broke-in and properly set-up they are very user-friendly. I guess I'm kinda biased towards TT as that is the only brand I own...2-GP.15's, 2-GP.25's, 4-PRO.36's, 1-GP.42, 10-PRO .46's and 2-FS.91's (and that's after selling some, too )...no, they aren't all in use currently...maybe someday though

Guys, have a look at where Zimbo lives!
Lets not confuse the issue for him by assuming that problems encountered in the USA with TT/Ace service, are going to be same in New Zealand.

I've had fantastic luck with the MECOA .46. Plus there is a cool diesel conversion head that also is great available from RMTEO.
For the same money that I paid for my 1st engine [.40la] the Mecoa blows it away.
