Frank Bowman   Email is: [email protected]  .
He makes very good rings for almost any engine. I swap his rings into new engines as well for improved performance.  He has them for the Zenoah.

Fitting a Bowman ring in your engine is the best favour you could ever do it.

Sorry for maybe a stupid question, but what does (pin) mean by some of the engines listed?

It means that there is a pin installed in the ring grove between the land areas to keep the ring from rotating around the piston. This is to prevent the end of the ring from entering an open port area where it might snag and cause a great deal of damage

The ends of the (pin) rings have an arc machined in them that fits in registration with the pin in the piston groove. A 4-cycle ring does not have that. Does everyone know what a Dykes ring is?

Dykes rings are low-pressure rings that use compression to tighten the ring against the wall as the piston rises. I used to race with a control-line guy in Northern California that made them. They are a great design.

Yes, they are "L" shaped and sit up high as possible on the piston. Why are they not popular on our modern gas engines? And don't some pistons have a small hole that allows compression gasses to get behind the ring and apply expanding pressure on the ring?

Dykes rings work well for their intended apps, but have two draw backs. One is a higher wear rate than normal rings, and the other is you have to watch them carefully that they don't carbon up and stick since they sit high on the piston and have the "L" shape. Rotax ultralight airplane engines use Dykes rings, and you have to pull the exhaust manifolds off at regular intervals to inspect the ring for carbon and proper movement.

Not popular in modern engines because they expand under compression. The higher compression the engine, the more pressure put on the cylinder walls, which increases wear and drag, which lowers power output. Dykes rings are a good idea for lower compression engines, bad idea for higher compression engines.
