Default Noobie To RC world

Hello all my name is Garrett or aka exokiler. I just recently got back into the RC world I had a traxxas revo 3.3 a few years back then blew the motor and it sat in my parents garage and my dad didn't know what they cost and tossed it in the trash!! Well since then I have moved and getting back into it as its loads of fun!

My question is does anyone have any suggestions on what type of RC I should get? I live in West TX/SE NM so there is a lot of flat land out here and sand dunes. I want something that can be used in the sand and then if I wanted to I can take to the tracks on the weekends. Also do lots of bashing and maybe some crawling gravel pits. I was thinking about just getting another nitro revo 3.3 but have been looking around and may go with something different weither it is nitro or electric. I can say I want speed and 4x4 but also wont be hurt by the sand that is out here. Don't know much about any other trucks other than traxxas trucks but on there site im liking of course the revos and the slayer pro 4x4 I like the Baja look of the truck and also the hpi trophy truggy 4.6.
Have a budget of around $1000 for the RC and stuff to get it going for the first few weeks.

Im open to any suggestion on the type of RC that would fit the terrain out here. Maybe even buy 2 RC's one with that budget? Like I said open to suggestions.

Thanks in advanced.

if you want to do crawling you almost need a dedicated crawler, or at least a scaler like a SCX10

Don't touch the trophy line they are turds on wheels.

You could pick up a decent 1/8th scale buggy, or even a truggy for that price, and probably still get a scaler for crawling.
IF you plan to race though go to the track 1st, and see what others run, and I'd base the decision around that.

Don't plan to race much as the nearest track is 2 hours away but would always be nice. Thanks for the tip as far as the trophy line of RC's.

Your local terrain sounds perfect for something like the Axial Exo-terra. Your budget is really good, so yeah you could also look into the 8th scale stuff. 8th scale is really tough. As for racing, these days it's mostly short course trucks and buggies. The thing about Traxxas is, they tend to be a little pricier than some other makers of same quality. On the other hand, their parts are everywhere, and, outfits like RPM make replacement parts that are better than the OEM parts.

Whatever gets on your short list, look around for forums specific to that model and find out what the first things are that you need to do to them. (There are always some things that are needed.) The E-Revo is a helluva truck, but it needs some extra bits to keep it reliable. For example, my OFNA Hyper10 TT is a tough little truggy, but I was breaking suspension arms almost every play day. Found I needed a set of T-Bone Racing front and rear bumpers. Solved the breakage problem.

And speaking of OFNA, look at their offerings over at NitroHouse.com .

Iv been looking around and posting on another forum and someone suggested I look at the axial yeti xl and have to say I spent hours last night watching videos of it and reviews on it and love it! My only thing is I don't like the body on it but I can fix that. Also was suggested to find a used hpi Baja 5b flux for a sand rig and then buy a new crawler like the scx10. So that's where I am at between going Baja/scx10 or going all out and getting the yeti XL.

Any other suggestions

For you, especially if you like the look of it better, the Baja 5B might be a better fit. HPI has some good models.....and some you should avoid like the plague. The Baja is one of the good ones. Didn't know you were considering large scale.

So I have come down to picking on of the 3 RC's
1. Yeti XL - love this thing but don't like the body and there is no other body out there for it.
2. Savage Flux HP - Love this RC to its a beast with brushless it does standing wheelies and I can pick on up with a 6s for cheaper than the yeti and also has more options on bodies. Also seems to do great in the sand dunes for jumping.
3. Slash 4x4 ultimate - Love the look out of the box its super fast has a Baja truck look. But some can say the Yeti does to but its not the same to me. Also some what cheaper so if upgrades needed early on I can do it. Also looks great in the sand and jumps good.

Does anyone have any suggestions on these? I don't mind any of them but what order from worst to best does everyone rate these? The Yeti and Savage I can get with either for $800 roughly but the savage is just alittle cheaper with the charger and battery as the yeti is alittle more but comes battery and charger.

Would appreciate any feedback on any of these. Wanting something to do dirt, sand, mud, snow and still hold up good after a day of beating.

Hello, my name is Ray Manley and I have been driving rc since 1968 and have now gotten into 1/5 scale. I have a hpi Baja 5 sc and don't know how to find people around here that do this. I live in Memphis Tn. and run a lot at an abandoned gravel pit that is as big and flat as the eye can see. I practice a lot and now want to run with others or maybe find a race to go to. Any help or advice would be great

only one I have not owned is the yeti on that list

Savages are fun, just be prepared for it to handle like a cinder block on wheels. Basically it will drive more like a monster jam style monster truck, and not some highly tuned racing machine that can turn on a dime(which I've seen quite a few people expect from a monster truck for some reason...). Snow though... you would have to take a lot of precautions on this, and do a damn good cleaning after every run.
If you want to go even bigger TCS has a conversion kit to make it 1/5th scale http://www.tcscrawlers.com/tcs-flux-...p/sku17912.htm (I actually wanted this kit, but have nowhere to put it)

Slash... I can not say I liked mine. It had a high COG so it flipped easy(almost easier then the savage if you were on a high traction surface). I won't lie I loved its look though that body style kicks ass. I turned mine into a stampede 4X4(more setup like a truggy)

Would the short course tires be a little narrow for sand duty? Would not a monster truck like the Savage have the advantage there?

Uh, Hi, Ray. Welcome. You might have better luck posting that question over here: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rc-r...s-bashers-206/
